FORT MYERS, Fla. - David Wells gave up Barry Bonds 701st home run. He doesnt want the Giants slugger to pass Babe Ruths total of 714.
No. Not really, the Boston Red Sox left-hander said Wednesday, one day after excerpts of a book were released alleging that Bonds used steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.
Bonds needs seven homers to pass Ruth for second place and 48 to overtake Hank Aaron for the top spot.
Wells praised Bonds baseball skills but said he should be a man and come out and say that he did it if he used steroids.

Well, no one would ever accuse Wells of using steroids. Or even vegetables, for that matter.
Nor do I.
Bonds was the total package and he didn't need to do roids in order to be great. Too bad he couldn't accept his place in the game. Assh#l#
Barring a divine act, it's likely he'll pass Ruth by the beginning of May. He did hit 5 homers last September, injured and under heavy scrutiny. I have no doubt, however, that he'll be given the Rose treatment by fans.
They'll say he had all the talent to be great, but allowed personal weakness to tarnish his talent.
Little doubt exists that Welles never did steroids. Twinkie injections on the other hand...
If he plays, he'll pass Ruth but not Hammerin' Hank. He did leave Spring Training and I wonder if he'll suffer an "injury" that will force him to retire (small chance, I know).
I wonder if the release of this book now was meant to stick to Barry right before the start of the season, no pun intended.
Bonds should fricking retire. He'll be forever known as a pariah, and he'll be treated just like Pete Rose is now, trolling at book signings and little league camps yearning for attention and whining that he deserves to make the HoF.
Time for collusion. Everytime Bonds puts his juiced butt in the box, walk him.
And of course right before the start of his new "reality" show.
If so, kudos to the publisher.
whatever. I am for unrestricted drugs! Yeah baby. 1000 Home runs. 32 - 7. Yippieee.

Too good...he should be plunked each time.
Good line.
But, in the interest of full disclosure, Wells might also have mentioned that he is a huge Ruth fan -- who owns an immense trove of Ruthian collectibles, caps, balls, bats, uniforms, etc.
In a manner of speaking, he does have a dog in this hunt...
Time for collusion. Everytime Bonds puts his juiced butt in the box, walk bean him.
Worse. Rose at least was (physically) clean and therefore legitimately broke Ty Cobb's all-time hits record, and fans recognize that fact.
brilliant! The pitcher could also make hans and frans poses. The whole team could !!!!
whatever
He sure is, okie. You probably remember the game where he wore one of the Babe's caps on the mound, only to be told it violated the league's uniform standards (it had a slightly different design than the current cap.) I think Wells has tried to pattern his social life after Ruth's, but that's a tough standard to keep. There's only so much alcohol in the world!
Ah, you beat me to the cap story, Mojo. Once again, great minds and all that.
