The NFL draft is just days away, so Reggie Bush's big payday as the probable No. 1 pick is imminent. But Bush, who left Southern Cal to turn pro after his junior season, doesn't think he should have had to wait this long to be able to fatten his wallet.
"I think [collegiate] athletes should get paid," Bush told ESPN.com recently. "Maybe not as much as NFL players, but they have to get something more than they get now."
Bush is well aware that he was worth a lot of money to USC, though it's not clear exactly how much the school profited from the star last year. Thousands of his No. 5 jerseys were sold, including in two days 1,200 replicas that carried a Rose Bowl patch. And more than 5,000 fans paid $79.95 to get behind-the-scenes footage of Bush and teammate Matt Leinart on www.mattreggietv.com.
"It's a lot of hard work preparing for the college season, and at the end of the day, it's a lot of strain on your body and you're dealing with a lot of pressure," said Bush, who won the 2005 Heisman Trophy. "Most athletes, their families don't have a lot of money; and that means that once you pay your rent, there's little left over for the daily bills."
Reggie Bush figures moves like this should've been worth a few bucks even in college. When asked how players should be paid, Bush suggested that athletes ought to be compensated based on performance. "Or maybe they could just pay the team equally," he said, "so that other players on the team don't get jealous."

Uh Reggie, you are getting paid, it's called a scholarship.
Which nowadays, most parents have to take out a second mortgage to afford.
yep....
However, college sports have become a world of their own in the past what 15 years or so?
The NCAA prostitutes these young men and women for it's own financial gain. Reggie did make USC and the NCAA a bunch of money but God forbid if someone helps him or his family out along the way. The case of Jeremy Bloom was one of the biggest jokes around. He was barred from making a living endorsing ski products while playing an unrelated sport.
The NCAA sucks ass.
Yes I was hearing an interview with Tom Zbikowski who is debuting in professional boxing on June 10th. He isn't allowed to take any endorsements from it, but he's going to take a beating.
It's crap.
I agree with him
I just heard Trey Wingo ask him if the Texans had asked him about this situation with the house. What the bleep would the Texans care about this?!
Could be a character issue thing for them....
Each team has subjective criteria and all that.
It's not like we're talking about a Lawerence Phillips type of character issues.
I know, but it's their team.....
Call it a hunch, call it gut feeling, call it what you will, but Reggie Bush is going to be a grade A dud in the NFL. He's too small, and will get rocked the first time an NFL linebacker turns his momentum from 4.4 to 0.0 in one second.
I wouldn't object to some small stipend, but it would have to be the same amount for every player at every college. And some colleges might drop their program entirely.
well you could set it up a couple different ways...
the 1st division would allow a stipend to go to the players (ala a summer job or something to that effect) and then the 2nd division would not allow a stipend to go if they so choose.
What I'd also like to see is that football would be offered as a degree program. It would focus on physics, physical therapy and sports psychology among other things.
He's the same size as Barry Sanders and Walter Payton, although a little bit taller.
If they are Division 1A schools then they are already raking in huge $$$ from the TV contracts and BCS. Hell, even Temple and Rutgers who suck every year make money from being Division 1A
I dunno. Unless you're one of the few who get drafted and stick on an NFL team, telling a prospective employer that you have a degree in football isn't going to do much to land a great job, IMHO.
Most of them won't go for it anyway, but I think he should be available to them if they wanted too...
It would carry the usual GECs so that if their football careers ended for whatever reason, they could easily go into another course of study.
If I were the Texans I'd trade down and get Mario Williams.
