Radio Vet Hendrie to Pursue Acting

Katy Bachman

APRIL 27, 2006 -

Phil Hendrie, one of the most creative and unique talents ever to broadcast on radio, is hanging up his mic to pursue his acting career. The last live broadcast of The Phil Hendrie Show, syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks (7 to 10 p.m. PST) on more than 100 radio stations, will be June 23.

For 16 years, Hendrie has taken the traditional talk format and turned it on its ear, with scores of characters that call in as if they were real listeners. “It’s time for me to take them from behind the microphone and present them in front of the camera,” said Hendrie.

Hendrie has most recently been featured in NBC’s sitcom Teachers, as the cynical history teacher, Dick Green. He also appeared as Judge McCarthy on Richard Appel’s sitcom A.U.S.A. He’s also performed several character voices on numerous episodes of the animated TV shows, King of the Hill and Futurama. His movie credits include being the voice of I.N.T.E.L.L.I.G.E.N.C.E. and playing a terrorist character in Team America: World Police.

“While his is a huge loss for radio, it’s a big win for television,” said Shelley McCrory, senior vp of comedy programming for NBC Universal Television Studio. “We’re thrilled with the work Phil’s doing on our comedy series ‘Teachers’ and look forward to a long future with him.’”

Let me know when Savage quits for good. That would be awesome.

I'd give anything if they'd replace Savage and his stupid french taxi song with Levin on my drive home.

WIND 560AM Chicago- are you listening??

We didn't hear his show in the bay area, but I always found it amusing to listen to when visiting my folks.

The new listener (who weren't yet in on the joke) callers were hilarious...

I'm still trying to figure out who he ticked off to get bumped off of KFI. He'd go over the line on occasion, but all in all, I thought he was funny.

Hendrie fakes calls. If I want fake news I'll watch CBS.

Phil Hendrie...the master of all radio

Being somewhat of a radio afficionado myself, and having never heard of him until now, I'm skeptical.

He was in Cincinnati a few years ago and did a fake broadcast of the Reds (who had a horrible pitching staff that year) playing a team of drunks. As each drunk came up to the plate (Babe Ruth, Ted Kennedy, Jenna Bush -- etc. you get the drift) the would be a first-pitch CRACK! and the drunk would have a base hit. It was absolutely hilarious.

The irate callers phoning in -- too funny! I doubt all of them were new to the show. I suspect a certain percentage never have figured it out.

Phil is something else. It still amazes me how he can play Phil, the main caller, plus another character while dealing with real callers. All at the same time without missing a step. I'll miss him.

Sure won't help "Ted's Of Beverly Hills" business.

Perhaps this picture of him will make the thread more palatable:

Problem was he wasn't news/talk or sports or music. He was his own genre.

This is seriously bad news for anyone who loves radio!

Hope Phil succeeds in his endeavors, whatever they may be, though. He always has seemed like a real stand-up guy.

Funny as hell, too, of course.

Some of his stuff was risque, but it was a hoot. All made up, yet people buying into it.

I remember the show where he "interviewed" the woman who still breast feed her children who were teenagers. Went to school everday to give them lunch. What a hoot!

Hendrie is an acquired taste, but once you "get it", he's great. He was sensational in the period just after 9-11.
