STERN EYES FREE RADIO
NY Post ^ | 05/09/2006 | JOHN MAINELLI

HOWARD Stern says he's been offered a "major deal" to come back to regular radio via satellite radio - just like his longtime enemies Opie & Anthony.

"The joke could be on them if I get good and worked up [because] I got offered a major deal to go back to terrestrial and stay on satellite at the same time," Stern told his Sirius listeners in comments replayed and mocked yesterday by "O&A."

"Can you imagine if I go across town against them in all those markets and just kick some a-? That would really be cool," said Stern, who now broadcasts to about a tenth of his former audience.

If an offer was actually made to Stern, it most likely came from Citadel Broadcasting, which is in the process of acquiring Disney/ABC's radio division - including New York's WABC, WPLJ and WEPN - and is headed by former Infinity/CBS exec Farid Suleman.

Once Suleman gets the keys to ABC's outlets, he could instantly return Stern to major FM stations in New York, L.A., Chicago and other huge cities, if Sirius, which is paying $500 million over five years for Stern's supposedly exclusive services, agrees to trade exclusivity for cash.

Stern needs to feel relevant. The man has had all kinds of money thrown at him, but he still must be longing for something more, on the inside.

He's sucking wind, and Sirius will probably gladly take cash in lieu of any exculsivity they have with him. It's not like they have people beating down their doors to listen to Howard. All the hype was just that---hype. His show is boring, and without FCC limitations, it can hardly push the envelope since there is no envelope to be pushed. O&A have made a cottage industry out of mocking him and it shows. Stern is losing it inside. He's berated his audience as cheap for not coming over to Sirius, he has only 1/10 of his former audience, and that's being very kind (probably more accurately 1/20), and his nemesis, O&A, get the best of him at every turn. In the end, he made a load of cash, but it could very well be at the expense of his massive ego.

I can't imagine paying to listen to him when I couldn't even stand listening to him for free.

By the Sirius people?.......

Yes. Their stock rose on the news of the payment and the news that their per-new-subscriber cost went down 40% since he was hired.

There's a sucker born every minute......

Maybe. There is no clear indication yet whether the big deal for Stern is a loser or a winner. Less people than Stern wanted signed up when he joined, but the numbers were apparently enough to please investors in the company, who haven’t balked at his share of the payroll.

There's two satellite radio companies and most people believe they will eventually be forced to merge. It's all about who gets to be the big fish and who gets to be the little fish when that time comes.

I agree.

In that sense I don't think the Stern move has succeeded. At least in judging by the initial subscriber push.

We'll know over time.

Sometimes when I'm driving I just about have to pull over to the shoulder, they get me goin' so bad.

If that crew can't make you laugh, nothing can.

When they all get on Christina after she's visited her relatives in Tennessee, I split a gut. Roe's character voice! LOL. Last week he was in prime.

I am sometimes amazed by Roe's incredible, and sometimes accurate, knowledge on practically every subject!
