Elliott Yamin was voted off American Idol Wednesday night, leaving Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee to battle it out next week.
When it was revealed that Yamin was going home, the audience gasped, Paula Adbul cried and Katharine McPhee and Taylor Hicks hugged him.
But it was over for Yamin, although Ryan Seacrest said he'd lost by an extremely narrow margin: Yamin received 33.06 percent of the final tally, a record 50 million votes.
Without naming names, Seacrest said the other singers racked up 33.26 and 33.68 percent of the votes.
"I'm very proud, and I'm honored," Yamin said, adding that he felt "truly blessed to take advantage of this opportunity." The 27-year-old from Richmond, Va., also indicated his mother and brother in the audience and said he was "so blessed to be able to experience this" with them.
On Tuesday's show, Simon Cowell had predicted Elliott wouldn't make it to the next round. "Your songs are not going to carry you through to next week that's the problem," Cowell said after Yamin delivered his rendition of Ray Charles's "I Believe to My Soul."
"However, you are a great guy," Cowell continued. "You are a great singer. And whatever happens, you will make your mom very proud for what you've achieved for this competition."
Abdul recently told Teen People that Yamin was her choice to win. On Tuesday's show, she told him, "You pierce through the heart."
The winner will be revealed next Wednesday during a live, two-hour finale. Cowell, who in the past accurately predicted Carrie Underwood's victory, this week told Jay Leno on the Tonight Show that he expects Hicks to take the crown.

When there were ten finalists I predicted that it would come down to McPhee and Hicks. I absolutely loved McPhee's version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It was stunning. But it's the only stunning thing she has done so far. She will not beat Hicks. His following was/is too diverse and too large for her or anyone else to overcome. Hicks owns the American Idol message board and has posting numbers that equal about two thirds of the entire board for all the people in the competition. That's astounding and interpolates in to huge numbers when it comes to people following him.
No matter what happens several of the people on the show this year will do very well. Chris Daughtry will do especially well because he has the perfect commercial rock voice. Pickler will likely do some acting and Paris Bennette and Mandisa should be OK.
Hicks has a gift for entertainment and is going to be very interesting to watch.
Nice thread you have here. But it could use a little more cow bell.

LOL. NO COWBELLS. I've caught about 4 or 5 episodes of AI. I thought for sure the little balck gal (Paris?) was going to be it.
But it's good to see a guy who looks older than me still in the running.

I'll take anyone but McPhee. She just doesn't do it for me at all!!!!!! Chris should have won with Elliot being the runner-up (out of the top 4), but no dice. So I guess I'm for Taylor now.

I was a Paris fan, but now I'm voting for MacPhee. She's really got lungs; not to mention other assets; the songs just haven't been the best picks for her, but a good agent will fix that.
To: The Ghost of FReepers Past
He reminds me of a bar singer. LOL. But he does a good Joe Cocker.

I was a Paris fanParis, Chris, and Mandisa were the real talents. I would put Elliot right after them. Taylor beats McPhee but neither really inspires me to purchase a cd.

She definitely needs the right songs. And to avoid screeching. Her Elvis songs were awful.
