'Canes take Game 1 over Edmonton - Stanley Cup Game 1
Raleigh (NC) News-Observer ^ | 6/05/06 | Some Staff Reporter

The Edmonton Oilers learned Monday what the rest of the NHL found out long ago. When you’re playing the Carolina Hurricanes, no lead is safe.

Rod Brind’Amour scored into an empty net with 31.1 seconds to play after Oilers backup goalie Ty Conklin misplayed the puck behind the net, giving the Canes a 5-4 win in the first game of the Stanley Cup finals.

Down three goals late in the second period, the Hurricanes scored four goals in less than 14 minutes to take the lead with 9:58 to play, and that was just the beginning of a wild third period.

Wow, what a game. I really thought Carolina was dead in the water after Edmonton took a 3-1 lead.

Cam Ward definitely was the hero for Carolina tonight. His blocker save with 3 seconds left sealed the game for the 'Canes.

So...who are you rooting for? What did you think of the game?

Opinions or comments - anyone?

Without Rollie the Goalie, Edmonton is done.

Oilers looked to win until Whitney, Whitney and Williams
scored. Roli started looking weak, and Conks little blunder sealed their fate.

Oilers were tough and quick to loose pucks, and it took the Canes a couple of periods to find their game.

I like their chances at least for now.

Go Canes.

Great game and you are right about Ward as he had some phenomenal saves tonight. I am rooting for Carolina since our Lightning were eliminated in the first round.

Two years ago, I rooted for Tampa Bay too. I was glad to see them beat Calgary.

Like Carolina, they were treated like a joke by many sports fans and writers.

If Carolina wins the Cup, they'll gain more respect too.

I came looking for a live thread about 2 hrs ago and saw nothing on FR. It was easily one of the best hockey games I have seen in 10 years. Incredible comeback by the Canes...with the net shake up now for the Oilers...I believe Lord Stanley will be living in the eye of the storm for the next year.

I'm a die-hard Devils fan...their long winning streak had them spent near the end of it all. I have been all Canes since that series ended.

I am working in my office and talking to a customer in Hong Kong when Brindamore scored the go ahead. I started yelling and my customer thought I was being attacked.
What an incredible comeback. I also thought they were done after the penalty shot. Figured the fresh legs of Edmonton was going to take the game tonight.
Cam Ward has played so well the whole playoffs.
Also, the girl singing the national anthems...MEOW!

Absolutely wild! One of the best games I have seen in years and I watch them all.
I have had the NHL center ice package sine 1997 and follow it very closely.
I can't believe Roloson is gone!
Unreal!

In Echo's defense, regular season can be dull. He has probably never watched a cup or playoff game.
It is a completely different game.

I play still play hockey in men's leagues and sometimes have trouble watching regular season games on TV. Live is another story.

Great game! Ward was phenomenal. One of the two best hockey games that I've ever seen.

I was all settled in for OT but that didn't happen. Looks like it's going to a great series. Go Canes!

Maybe so...
NHL playoff hockey is the most exciting, thrilling sporting event...if people don't like it than they are missing out.
Its just complete ignorance on their part.
I grew up playing and watch every playoff game, so I am extremely biased.

I love the playoffs. I bought an XM Radio to follow the games from work.
I work at night so the West Coast games are not so bad. I love playoff time.
I am a die-hard Bruins fan but since moving to NC, I have jumped on the Canes band wagon. Hey, they were the old Whalers so its OK.

I was born near Boston, grew up in CT.....
and have followed The Canadiens since I was 6 or 7!
The old Habs, Dryden,LaFleur,Robinson,Gainey........
they are not very good now but, like a moron- I watch EVERY game!
I'll even watch the French speaking satellite feed when its the only TV broadcast on...so I am hardcore.
I thought Edmonton would win this series but without Roloson I don't feel good about that now...unreal.
What a game, absolutely wild!
Make sure you dvr the rest of the games...I hope Edmonton can bounce back.
