Get real, folks! Storms are normal fare

LOAD UP ON THE WATER, MARTHA! TAPE THE WINDOWS! BREAK OPEN A TIN OF TUNA FISH! HUNKER DOWN IN THE CELLAR WITH THE RADIO! (Uh, scratch that last one. We don't have cellars here in sunny Florida.) If you listened to the media and the government in the past few days, you'd have thought Armageddon was imminent in the persona of that little bad boy, Alberto. We had "24-hour coverage" from the television stations. From WESH-Channel 2, we had a festive "magenta" map, as one talking blonde pointed out proudly. The station even went live with a news crew to the "scene" of a downed tree in Volusia County on Monday afternoon. STOP THE PRESS! A TREE FELL IN THE FOREST! MAYBE THERE'S A BEAR IN THERE, TOO! Alberto, a tropical storm, breezed almost invisibly through Lake County on Monday and Tuesday on its way to the big blue water on the other side of our peninsula. OK, we got damp. Big deal. Powerful storms are nothing to take lightly, but this was embarrassing. The government, with the help of TV -- this newspaper was guilty, too -- revved this story into high gear, playing on the fear left over from back-to-back real hurricanes two years ago. What a sorry spectacle. It rained, OK? We needed it.

I live in Upstate New York. Every year it snows. Every year there is panic as if it hadn't happened before. Every year it goes away and it turns to spring.

My friends live in Florida. They complain about the heat all year long, the lack of rain and the pending hurricanes. Ah, destiny!!

It's no different in Indiana...Every year we get storms in May/June, and at least one snow storm in the winter...Yet the local media goes into a frenzy and acts like the sky is falling.

When I was a kid we had Snowstorms and Thunderstorms. Now we have:

SEVERE WEATHER

Replete with break-in news bulletins and on site live coverage.

Its like disaster is always just looming over the horizon as far as local weather reporting goes.

Don't forget that "LIVE DOPPLER RADAR" that is supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread! Love when we get a little rain or snow and the news opens with the weather report - live late-breaking weather! Gosh, like we don't know what rain or snow is!
