I'm starting a new Motorcyclists Rights PING List that will cover all topics of concern for on and off-road motorcyclist and ATV riders' rights. If you want on or off this list just send me a FReepmail.

Maybe there won't be charges, but I'll bet her insurance and not Roethlisberger's will be paying for all that expensive hospital care.

The motorist who committed a Right-of-Way Violation by turning into Roethlisberger's path and causing the accident.

I've heard that 'The Fly' Roethlisberger is involved in a sport with mandatory helmet use. If a Dallas Cowboy takes his head off, can we chalk it up to a 'Right-of-Way Violation'?

Dear Mrs. Fleishman,

It worked like buttuh!

Although we really enjoyed Ben when he was here at Oxford tossing for the RedHawks(Skins), he has become a bit of a pain the last 2 years.

Thank you so much for suggesting to us the Pittsburgh Left.

Being a conservative town, we don't have much to do with the left, but this time around, the liberal road might be the road to the Super Bowl.

Get the popcorn ready. Heat up the Buttuh!

Sincerely,

Carson Palmer

Needs saying -- thanks. A large percentage of motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers turning left in front of them.

I was ironed out and pretty seriously injured in 1981 by a driver turning left in front of me (we both had greens). While the good folks from a nearby house were getting me untangled from the crushed beer can my Harley FXS had become, the idiot was standing by yelling at me that "four-wheelers always have the right-of-way over two-wheelers."

He didn't shut up until the responding LEO informed him that I was an ex-cop, now a prosecuting attorney, and might already have some passing familiarity with the traffic laws...

The problem here is that you have worked backwards to justify a pre-determined outcome. Although the driver did violate the right of way (in the scariest type of motorcycle accident - YIKES!) it only reinforces the need to wear a helmet. Nobody is saying that the accident was caused because he didn't wear a helmet. Just that the injuries sustained would probably have been less severe if he had been wearing a helmet.

Well made points, especially about left turning drivers and others who fail to yeild the right of way.

I might add, though, that merely being able to afford a motorcycle is no guarantee of being able to operate it.

The rider was driving sans endorsement, and should have taken the time to have that credential in place.

Most seasoned riders will be anticipating just such a maneuver on the part of cagers who have hidden behind "But officer, I didn't see him." for far too long--it is by no means confined to PA.

Headlight laws (daytime headlights on for motorcycles) were designed to help assist in making motorcycles more visible, but daytime running lights on other vehicles have negated that advantage.

Which leaves us with two main defenses: driving defensively and obnoxiously loud pipes. While the former is not perfect, it helps, the latter... Well, if you are pissing them off, at least they know you are there. YMMV

I ride a 94' Nostalgia Heritage and have a lot of money put into it and plan to keep it looking sharp. I ride like a paranoid schizophrenic and that fact has kept me out of several possible accidents already. I ride with a helmet and gloves, sometimes leathers if the heat is not unbearable, and have my daughter do the same when we're riding. The adage of its not if someone pulls in front of you, its when, is appropriate.

How fast was he driving? If you are going 60 in a 35 zone, driving a low profile vehicle like a motorcycle, by the time an elderly or older driver sees you coming, it may be too late. Most M'cycle riders realize that they are cloaked in invisibility to drivers in cages.
