An alleged hit-and-run driver who police say struck a 20-year-old man was chased down and beaten by the victims older brother Thursday night in South Waco.
Michael Campbell, 26, was in front of his house in the 3000 block of Mildred Street as his younger brother and two friends were walking home about 9:25 p.m., Waco Police Department spokesman Steve Anderson said. As they got closer to home, Michael Campbell saw a Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 20-year-old Arturo Martinez speeding down the road.
The two friends jumped over a parked car to get out of the Cavaliers way, Anderson said. But Durell Campbell, 20, was hit so hard that he was tossed into the air, he said.
When Michael Campbell saw that Martinez was not stopping, he ran after him, yelling for him to stop, Anderson said. When Martinez kept going, Campbell ran back to his house, jumped in his GMC truck and floored it.
Campbell followed the car around the corner to Gurley Lane and then rammed his truck into the back of the Cavalier, Anderson said. Martinez lost control and struck a house at 1929 Gurley Lane, he said.
Campbell then apparently pulled Martinez out of the Cavalier and began beating him in the face, Anderson said. By the time people from inside the house came outside, Martinez was unconscious.
The witnesses yelled at Campbell to stop hitting Martinez, Anderson said.
After a few seconds, Campbell got back in his truck and drove back to his house to check on his brother, Anderson said.
When officers arrived, they determined that Martinez and Durell Campbell needed to be taken to the hospital for incapacitating injuries.
Durell Campbell, who suffered a dislocated shoulder and bruised hip, said Friday that Martinez lives nearby and that he and his brother frequently see him speeding down the street and around the corner where they live.
Considering he had been hit by a car less than 24 hours earlier, he said he felt pretty good.
Michael Campbell was taken to the McLennan County Jail. He was charged with aggravated assault and was released Friday afternoon after posting $25,000 bond.
Martinez also was taken to jail after being treated for his injuries, Anderson said.
He was charged with failure to stop and render aid and was released after he posted $3,500 bond. He also was cited for speeding and for not having a license or liability insurance, Anderson said.
No one in the house was injured, Anderson said, although there was some minor property damage.
Any papers?
I'll bet they didn't check Martinez' blood alcohol level, either.
BTW... I wonder if he's a resident?
Yes,of *course* he's a *resident*.What he lacks,however,is a Green Card.
He's just injuring the Americans that Americans couldn't be bothered to injure.
LOL....
I'd rather see a hung prosecutor!
OK...whatever floats your boat. ;-)
No license or insurance? Geez, I bet than never happens anywhere else! I say congratulations to the brother who beat the crap out of the hit-and-run driver. At least we know the guy paid something for his crime. As for the brother, I would be proud to serve on his jury and vote for acquital.
Same here, I don't think Martinez is going to garner much sympaty with a TX jury.
Martinez was released after he posted $3,500 bond, after a hit and run.
What is that about?
