Naomi Campbell appeared in court yesterday accused of assaulting a former housekeeper with her mobile phone.

The model, who could face up to seven years in prison if found guilty, did not speak during the brief pre-trial hearing in New York.

The court was told that there had not yet been an action to indict her on a charge of second-degree assault and the judge adjourned the case until September ahead of a possible plea bargain.

Campbell, 35, has denied the allegation that in a fit of pique she threw her phone, believed to be a diamond-encrusted Blackberry, at her housekeeper, Ana Scolavino.

Miss Scolavino, 41, was taken to hospital after the blow to the back of her head and needed four stitches, according to police. Campbell's lawyers argue that the maid's injury was self-inflicted after she had been dismissed for stealing.

At the end of the hearing, Campbell, wearing a tight black dress, strode quickly out of the building only to find that there was no car waiting to pick her up.

Engulfed by photographers and cameramen, she stood with lips tightly pursed, but stayed calm until her escort arrived.

On Monday the model was the subject of a fresh lawsuit, when another former employee claimed that Campbell struck her on the head for failing to find a pair of jeans.

Gaby Gibson accused Campbell of causing personal injuries and of employment discrimination. Campbell's lawyers deny the allegations.

The model already has a reputation for a short fuse. She pleaded guilty in 2000 to assaulting an assistant with a phone and grabbing her by the throat while shooting a film in Canada.

Campbell has attended anger-management classes and once appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss her temper, which she blamed on being abandoned by her father before she was born.

The model has recently been spotted wearing a T-shirt with the slogan "Naomi Campbell hit me - and I loved it".
