Like I said, Germany is finally a normal nation - we got over problems with patriotism. Hope you enjoyed your stay, at least you had good weather. Did you have the chance to walk at the Rhine river? That´s my favourite place: sitting at the bank promenade and have a beer (or a Radler) with friends.

Exactly, Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben was a democrat, but unfortunately also a antisemite - like so many in the 19th century. Still, his intentions when he wrote the song were nothing but good. The third stanza can´t be better: Unity and Justice and Freedom for the German Fatherland - written at a time when Unity and Justice and Freedom seemed unreachable in a country oppressed by monarchs.

I think it says that he hopes Brazil will win.

What are you doing in Europe?? Hawaii is a great place during the entire year!
I'm not knocking Hawaii and have loved living there, but it is small and limiting.
I was born in Germany and came to America as a kid. Kind of catching up on my roots, visiting relatives in Munchen (my birthplace) and Antwerp.

You make a good point about Americans celebrating in more private ways. But we have been capable of politically directed 'million man' marches.
And we do have stadiums which fans do not leave singing in harmony. I was overwhelmed by the crowd in Berlin stadium after Germany beat Argentina. Really exhilarating, and I was so happy for my Vaterland.
Thanks for your reply, and I do hope the Gemutlichkeit continues. It really is fantastic that Deutschland is feeling the pride to fly the flag.

Sorry the ideas put forth are completely delusional. Argentina almost sent them home and actually they should have. If Argentina doesn't have their keeper go down to injury they most likely would have finished the job.

The Italians will reintroduce Germany to defeat like they did earlier this year, 4-1 and like they always do.

Budesliga, you've got to be kidding.

Gracias.

Thanks much. I'm only occasionally on the thread but have enjoyed it all thus far.

My son was at the games the first week. He's just back from Europe last evening and I'll get to hear more about those first games.

He told us that his England game ticket could have been sold for about 800 euros or more.

Germany escaped from Argentina who sat too passive on their lead.
They are not Italy. Too bad for Argentina.

Italy does what they always do. They dispatch Germany.

The goalkeeper's injury completly ruined the subbing for Argentina. Sadly they didn't use Messi or Saviola when they could. I think that cost Argentina the match. Messi's loss was huge. His control of the game was missed as Argentina needed it most.

I really feel sad for Argentina because of that. I don't know why Peckerman put in Cruz instead of Messi.

Riquelme was clearly not playing well. He was out of gas and apparently not in full condition after the first half. I believe too much responsibility place on him and a mistake not having Saviola out there to decentralize the attacking play.

Sadly, Argentina would be a tougher foe than Germany against Italy.

Now Italy advances to the final.

If only the Germans could be so well behaved when they are outside Germany.
Then their boorishness knows no bounds. But it's better for them to hold that title than America.

So there you have it, you are number one.

I don't know if you call a penalty on the foul to Maxi. But you can't call a yellow on him when he has a leg taken down.

I feel bad for Argentina. They would have been tougher on Italy.
Now people will be scratching their heads and saying, "How did Italy get here?"

Then their boorishness knows no bounds.

Given the tenor of your posts on this thread, I'd say you're an expert on that topic.

You can't claim Maxi dived when he had a leg taken out. He didn't have both legs taken out just one.

If you don't give a penalty for it, okay, but to issue a yellow. Absurd.

I am not into the World Cup, but I hope England makes it to the semi-finals and finals.

All that work by the English soccer hooligans should not go to to waste(tongue in cheek).

My wife and daughter are in Berlin. The atmosphere is tremendous. It sounds like a month long version of Carnival. Let's hope Germany makes it to the final and wins.

...91% of the visitors asked in a poll whether they want to come back to Germany, recommend Germany to their friends and whether they enjoyed their stay answered with "Yes, definitely.

I hope the Germans replenish the beer before Oktoberfest. Those English act like locusts when they sweep in.

Given your great insights on the world's game, offers little credence here. Stick to the NFL, those are your best comments on football.

Are you going to give us an update on training camp?

I'm predicting an Italy win over Germany, again. That's what's up.
