Dying deer given CPR

By Corey Wicks Staff reporter

When it comes to concern for wildlife, people in Joseph put their mouth where their concern is.

Literally.

Wallowa County Detective Neil Rogers was called to a report of a deer that had been hit by a vehicle Sunday, July 2, in downtown Joseph. When Rogers arrived a crowd of people had gathered in the street and were in the process of pulling the deer out from underneath a trailer, Rogers said.

The deer was badly mangled but managed to wake up and stumble past the crowd. It then fell into a nearby creek and started drowning.

Rogers went to re-park his car and when he returned, two men were pulling the deer out of the creek.

“One guy was giving compressions and the other guy was giving it mouth-to-mouth,” Rogers said. “I couldn’t really look over there because I was starting to laugh too hard. It had to be one of the funniest things I’ve seen in law enforcement.”

The detective didn’t know whether a person could contract any unusual diseases by giving CPR to a deer.

“I don’t even like touching those things without gloves. I couldn’t even imagine going to that extreme,” Rogers said.

The deer was too badly injured to survive, he said. Rogers then took the deer behind a building and shot it.

The detective didn’t know whether the first aid responders were locals, but speculated that they were “probably from Portland or somewhere.” He added, “they haven’t been around here much.”

It's a good gesture. I gave CPR to an animal once in a college lab course. My instructor thought I was an idiot. I thought he was a sadist.

Stupidity ascending ...

Finally came to his senses.

The potential for cross-species disease is so high, this is tantamount to suicide.

I gave CPR to an animal once in a college lab course.

That was surely a better assignment than mine. I had to tranquilize the entire herd, vicerate each one and separate the contents of the GI tract from the other organs and then individually spray dry all the separate components, package each specimen and then weigh them all. Got paid pretty well, tho.

The closest I come to that kind of mouth contact is yelling "Good night dear".

I have to say it loud cause some times she doesn't hear it through the wall.

CPR is usually ineffective in trauma, although there's no real harm in doing it, cause they aren't going to get any deader. Drowning victims, it depends on their time underwater, water temp, and a few other variables. I haven't done it, but guys in my department have done CPR on dogs and cats. I've put non-rebreathers on dogs we've pulled out of fires. First time I've heard of it with a deer, though.

Stupid Bipedal Hominids! That is the cruelest thing I've read in months. I would've IMMEDIATELY put the animal out of its misery...and into my freezer. But that's just me. ;)

On a lighter note...how does one give CPR to a fish? Put it's head in the toilet? LOL! :)

They had better be glad Bambi didn't come to and cut lots of nice long gashes in them with it's hooves.

Total idiots.

I'm glad the officer had sense and courage enough to do what needed to be done and end the animal's suffering quickly as possible.

With chronic wasting disease, ticks, and various other parasites, I'd be damn careful about getting that "involved" with a deer.

I got that right away...but then my Grandpa was a butcher by trade, so we've been "separating components" for years, LOL!

This is why I refuse to take my younger daughter (the EMT) hunting. First she would shoot it, then she would save it.

The bambi wouldn't know they weren't predators and could have bitten the guy, kicked them or both. Furthermore, bambis carry a nasty thing called Lyme Disease.

Better to be an animal if your're sick. The leftists in charge will do everything they can do keep an animal alive, but as for humans, lotsa luck! You'll be starved and dehydrated to death (in a state of euphoria, as the left wanted us to believe).

how does one give CPR to a fish?

Force oxygenated water through it's gills.
