Knowing (roughly) the speed of the bullet, and given its deformation, I suspect they could safely surmise it had been fired from a distance at which accuracy would depend on the use of a scope.

We had a guy in forensics who identified the make, model and a period of time of manufacture of a rifle based on the rifling on recovered bullet fragements. The case was a homicide.
