This is a clear case of "hold my beer!"

"told guests his .45-caliber revolver was not loaded",

"The sheriff's office said alcohol was believed to have been involved."

Darwin nominee. Dumbass! A revolver is the easiest thing to check and see if its loaded:
Just open the cylinder, extract bullets, count bullets and hope they add up to the number of holes...of course you can just look for daylight down the empty holes...p)

I would imagine that one the party guests saw the drunk cop pull out his .45 that most of them left the house.

So you think it is a joke?

A man made a big mistake, the biggest of all and you think it is a joke.

The sheriff's office said alcohol was believed to have been involved.

No more need be said. Were his last words "hey , y'all watch this?"

"...he picked up the handgun and was showing it around when it accidentally discharged..."

Let's rephrase that a bit for accuracy, shall we?

"...he picked up the handgun and was showing it around when he negligently caused it to discharge..."

There. That's better. I hate it when the press attributes animation to inanimate objects.
