SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Hewlett-Packard Co. supplanted Dell Inc. as the world leader in personal computer shipments during the third quarter, returning the bragging rights to Silicon Valley for the first time in nearly three years, according to figures released Wednesday by two influential research firms.

Both Gartner Inc. and IDC pegged the overall third-quarter growth of the global PC market at just under 7 percent, but that trend was overshadowed by the industry's new pecking order.

The changing of the guard occurred after HP's shipments climbed by 15 percent from a year ago while Dell's edged up by less than 4 percent.

In the United States, Apple Computer Inc.'s shipments rose by more than 30 percent from last year, reflecting strong back-to-school demands for its notebooks. The Cupertino-based company, which has become better known for its ubiquitous iPods, ended the quarter with a 6 percent share of the U.S. market.

Their replacing all the IBM at work with HP's I am worried that it might cost me my job. Those HP's just never seem to break.

I love HP computers. I have an HP Pavilion that I just upgraded with no problems. For some reason I'm not a big Dell fan. Just never got into their computers.

Apple's back to school deal was tough to beat. Buy a laptop get a 2GB nano and a printer for free. I can see how that helped them during the quarter.

I have a Pavilion in the back room. It works, but it hasn't been turned on in a couple of years.

I like my HP laptop, but after 7 months or so, the monitor went dim. From doing a google search, it sounds like the problem is the "backlight."

I just hooked up my desktop monitor and continued on...now past the time of 1 yr. warranty.

Think the repair job is pretty high priced, so I'll just leave it as is. Miss the mobility though.

Wow. Carly Fiorina was right after all. We should have given her a little bit more time.

Its because HP doesn't use those Shiddy Intel Motherboards that have the damn video cards frying all the time. I have lost count of how many of those I have replaced. Lucky all but one was under warranty.
