ESPN's Jim Caple proves he is a joke over his future McGwire vote (Vanity)

Posted on 10/25/2006 9:10:38 PM PDT by AZRepublican

Jim Caple says Mark McGwire has his vote for entering baseball's Hall of Fame. To justify his vote he stoops to the level of an activist liberal court justice. Caple writes:

"Baseball writers knew McGwire was taking Andro in 1998 and some of us suspected he might be taking something more powerful than that. I remember looking at him and Sammy Sosa sitting at a news conference and being absolutely astounded at their enormous biceps. But whatever suspicions we held didn't stop any of us from repeatedly writing that Big Mac and Sammy were saving the game. If we didn't care about possible steroid use then, how can we honestly care so much now?"

I'll tell you how we can care now, Jim: It's one thing to enter the Hall of Fame on ones on physical merits, it's another to induct someone who needed outside help to defy father nature to enter the record books at the end of their career.

Caple then writes: "And just why is McGwire so suspect but we give a pass to David Ortiz, Frank Thomas and Albert Pujols? I'm not saying any of those players take illegal performance enhancers but they're all built as powerfully as McGwire and they all hit a lot of home runs."

Who say's any of these guys are getting a pass, Jim? You mean sports writers giving them a pass maybe, right? These guys aren't at the end of their careers that are suddenly exhibiting unusual feats they did not when they were younger. Imagine a Roger Maris on steroids, poor Mark would undoubtly still be chasing his HR record.

And then Jim Caple makes a complete fool out of himself when he says: "If we're worried about illegal drug use, then how come we happily voted in Paul Molitor, who once had a bad cocaine habit? If we're worried about performance-enhancing drugs, how come we voted in so many players from the '60s, '70s and '80s without a second thought when we knew how widespread amphetamines use was during that era?"

Well, Jim, amphetamines or cocaine does not give a hitter faster bat speed or prolong the affects of aging. You know this, so why are you ignoring it in your poorly articulated rant? McGwire belongs in the Hall of Shame, not fame.

I suggest also that Jim Caple should join him to keep him company.

prolong the affects of aging

HUH?

Sounds like he has a pretty sound argument....he is saying why you complain bout these guys but not every one else..why is gaylord perry in the hall for one form of cheating but all of a sudden this form is wrong...why are reporters now whining about drugs when they knew full well what was going on and not only didnt say anything but glorified it...all legit points..why we whine about kids and drugs now but not kids and drugs when it was coke and greenies..to say coke has no influence on play is silly..sounds like he has legit points all the way thru

Speed actually helps keep someone alert and awake over the grind of the long season.

And, baseball decided to let Gaylord Perry in so for them to make an issue about Sosa, McGuire and Bonds is laughable. Cheating has been part of the game for a long time and while it dirtied the sport no one seemed to care until recently.

David Ortiz, Pujols & Thomas on the juice? All three are great hitters. Ortiz has been good for the past 4 years after getting out of the Twins organization, Pujols is the best RH hitter in the game and Thomas dominated the game for a dozen years. His .OBP is tremendous. I know, there's no proof that Caple isn't a raging faggot and a secret lover of little boys but he looks like someone who does.
