Cowboys release shaky Vanderjagt, sign Gramatica

Mike Vanderjagt's short, but rocky tenure as the Cowboys' kicker is over.

ESPN's Ed Werder reports that Dallas has released Vanderjagt and signed Martin Gramatica to replace him.

The most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history, Vanderjagt, who signed a three-year contract worth nearly $6 million as an unrestricted free agent this spring, has converted only 13 of 18 field goals. That's only two fewer misses in 11 games than the nine-year veteran had in the past three seasons combined.

In his eight seasons with the Colts, a tenure sometimes marked by petulance and marred by a long-standing feud with quarterback Peyton Manning, he converted 87.5 percent of his field goal attempts.

Do you think that Culpepper is in for a problem getting his starter's job back next summer?

I do if Harrington hangs around....

I think we learned Thursday that the problems in Detroit had nothing to do with Harrington.

No question about it. The Dolphins are going to have to make a decision this off season because they're paying Culpepper a lot of money.

Yeah but I knew that all along :)

Here's one for you....

Who is more incompetent: Isiah Thomas as a GM or Matt Millen?

Gee...do you think in retrospect Saban wishes he'd gambled on Drew Brees' shoulder?

You could have them switch jobs and they still couldn't do a worse job.

I know the Chargers are playing great and Rivers looks good but imagine if Brees was still there.

LOL

I'll only admit it if he gets another kicking job in the NFL in the next week :)

A team can't win without a good kicker. The kicker on my team, Shayne Graham, is the man.

Great - Dallas is purging the last vestiges of chokeness and loserdom in preparation for a SB run this season. Parcells smells the brass ring with Romo at the helm and doesn't want some drunken headcase to screw it up. Go 'Boys!!

Graham is excellent. As is Brown on Seattle, Akers on Philly, Kasay on Carolina (although a little shakier this year). The value of a good kicker cannot be underestimated.

The reason Saban went with Culpepper over Brees is Culpepper's ability to deliver the deep ball. Brees has looked good, but Saban wants an offense that can stretch the field. You wouldn't know it judging by the play calls this season, though--Miami is one of the least vertical teams in the NFL this year, compared to being second-most in 2005. A lot of that is on Mularkey, but also Harrington's inaccuracy throwing medium and long balls.

Don't be fooled by the Detroit game; it's Harrington's ONLY good game this season. Unless he plays that way in every single game from here until the end of the season, there's no way he's challenging Culpepper for starter status in 2007. Of course, if Culpepper can't return to form, then it's a different story...
