I thought there was some funky, twisted logic Canadian Supreme Court ruling that prostitution was legal, but solicitation wasn't. in other words, you can pay for sex, but you can't talk about paying for sex.

Yep, the act itself is perfectly legal. Which stands to reason - who's to say why anyone might choose to have sex with anyone else, or why someone might choose to give someone else some money? But offering to buy or sell sex, that they could make, and keep illegal.

FWIW, I say go ahead and legalize the industry. Might at least help to clean it up a little. Probably wouldn't eliminate the illegal and undesirable street walkers working in places where they're not appreciated, though. And that's the part of the industry that tends to bother people the most.
