There's nothing average about the Joe at McDonald's.
The Golden Arches beat out java giants Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts, along with Burger King, in a coffee taste test run by Consumer Reports magazine.
The magazine proclaimed McDonald's Premium Roast Coffee had "no flaws" and was easiest on the wallet.
"Try McDonald's, which was cheapest and best," Consumer Reports says in its March issue. "Or make your own coffee."
Of the four, McDonald's cost the least, $1.35, on average.
It "was decent and moderately strong," the magazine says, "although it lacked the top notes needed to make it rise and shine."
Starbucks might have the most vocal fan club among the caffeine crowd, but its $1.55-a-cup brew was deemed ordinary. "Strong, but burnt and bitter enough to make your eyes water instead of open," the report said.
McDonald's main competitor is Burger King, but McDonald's beat it on taste and price.
Burger King's coffee cost $1.40 a cup, and was a pale imitation. "Looked like coffee but tasted more like hot water," Consumer Reports said.

Ditto that.
7-11 also has pretty good gourmet coffee. But the best gourmet coffee is my own homemade brew. It is also much cheaper than paying for fancy paper cups elsewhere.

Agree 7-11 is the best. I dont go to MCD's ever, but have been to star yucks.
Einstein's Bagels has really good coffee too. I can't remember the last time I saw a Dunkin Donuts (in CO).
I couldn't agree with you more. I LOVE 7-Eleven's drip-brewed coffee due to the strict 7-Eleven corporate policy of not keeping their fresh-brewed coffee more than one hour sitting on the burner.
Even for home brew, I don't care for Starbucks. I like much better certain types of Gavalia coffee.
It was an interesting test test. CR compared drip coffee against French Pressed coffee. It seem like they should have compared drip to drip and similar roasts, rather than average (MD) to bold (SBX).
Senior citizens in the smaller cities in America discovered McD's coffee at least a decade ago. A mid morning or a mid afternoon stop at a McD's next to a BK, CJ' and even a SB, the McD's often would be filled with local seniors enjoying their coffee, newspapers and gossip, and the other places would be empty or near empty.
Jack in the Box has awaken to this reality, and Jack is now selling breakfast all day with some very good coffee to go with his Biscuit breakfasts.
My trophy bride, this fall had to have the new self adjusting braces installed on her lower teeth to stop and change a growing and serious problem of tooth over crowding.
She has to eat smaller meals or snacks through out the day as it takes forever for to eat a regular meal. She still can't eat anything that requires a lot of chewing.
The tech at her orthodonist recommended Jack's new biscuit breakfast as a snack. Often on her day off we will split one of Jack's Biscuit breakfast with an extra coffee.
Before people panick about weight gain and higher cholestrol, she has lost 20+ #'s since October and her C levels have dropped 15%. A nutritionist friend said the slow eating and spreading the calorie intake (grazing) over the day often has this effect. A younger Mexican American woman, who used to work with my wife, and her sister have lost over #30's in about a year with these self adjusting braces. Their C level's have gone from about 20% over desired levels to normal levels.
Not too surprising unfortunately. Everybody wants to go upscale.
I can't remember the last time I saw a Dunkin Donuts (in CO).
LOL. We don't do the Dunkin Donuts in Alabama, here it is Krispy Kreme or bust. ;-)
We have some good bagel places in Birmingham with decent coffee and of course a gazillion Starbucks and independent coffee places but IMO the old school places like Waffle House and McDonalds serve the best stuff. Of course you need to realize that I am 43 so probably stuck in the past.
Maybe the Starbucks we get in Birmingham are not up to the quality of what you have in elsewhere but I've never found them to be anything special. Just pricey.
Like I said, I'm probably just at that age where I'd rather my joe be served up by a gal that calls me "sugar" than one of our young, tattooed bohemians with attitude we have workin' at Sb. LOL
"But the best gourmet coffee is my own homemade brew. It is also much cheaper than paying for fancy paper cups elsewhere."
I love gourmet coffee, but I'm cheap, LOL! The way I do it is to buy one of those smaller gourmet packets (.99) and add that to the cheapest coffee I can buy; usually a store brand, which is really a national brand in disguise, anyway. One packet to three cups or so of the cheaper grounds works for me.
My other secret is those flavored Coffee Mate liquid creamers. They make any cheap coffee taste good. ;)

Wasn't Roseanne the voted the #1 Show in America for a few years?
