Having problems with my new PC Again.

About a month ago I bought a HP Media PC, it has an AMD64x2, 2gigs RAM, 500gig HD with WindowsXP Media edition. I am hard wired to my router and am using SBC Yahoo DSL with 2374.9 kbps on my last seed test.

I am having problems with streaming videos, they are choppy and keep freezing. My laptop, with a P4 mobile and only 512 MB Ram connected to the same router plays fine.

I am taking several classes on-line and it is really annoying trying to watch videos for the class. I don't mind having to do it on my laptop, but I bought this computer so I wouldn't have to.  I have search Google and the HP site and cannot figure out what I need to change to get the videos to play right.

Also...I use windows media player 11.

Any help would be great.

1. Are you using WMP 11 on both computers?

2. Are you running anything on your desktop PC that could be slowing down the processor and interfering with the streaming video (check the task manager, ctrl+alt+del)?

Sorry to hear about your difficulties, and while I’m not familiar enough with your system to advise you, you might consider visiting Maximum PC’s website:

http://www.maximumpc.com/forums

If you don’t get any help here (and FR has some great tech support types), you might find the answers you need over at MaxPC.

Good luck!

1. Yes, same player

2. there are a lot of services running, but since I'm not that computer literate I have Absolute Start Up installed and trust it to turn off everything I don't need.

I guess I could go into services and turn off everything that is running on my PC that doesn't run on my laptop.

Click on Tools and select Options. You will see this screen. Set acceleration to full.

Click on Advanced and set everything for the fastest setting.

If that doesn't speed things up you might have a lot of other junk running in the background.

Get Crap-Cleaner and clean out all the junk. CCleaner also has an option to view all the files that are running at startup. You can dump the ones that are not necessary. I have a computer page that has a link to find out what all the other startup programs are and if they are needed.

Varmint Al's Computer Page. It will help you in cleaning the junk out of your computer.

http://www.tweakguides.com/TGTC.html

go there, download the windows XP tweakguide.
open it with winzip and adobe acrobnat reader.
Go through the chapters and do the simpler tweaks.
Make sure you adjust The Windows XP Page File.

Go to www.guru3d.com and download the newest drivers, and download the last WHQL certified drivers for your video card. Try to install the WHQL drivers.

If you want to go a step further,
1. create a restore point
2. go to
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm
and you can start closing down services.

The one thing I don't see posted here is anything about your video card and driver. Is it PCI express or AGP?

When I first souped my PC up to the AMD64 I had much the same problem. If you start moving your mouse around the screen, does it stop for a second and then continue?

This is nothing more than a corrupt video driver. I fixed mine by updating to the latest drivers. It has been fine ever since. I watch DVD's all the time now.

Make sure you have the latest update for your card. If you have the latest driver, and it still is giving you problems, consider going back one update on the driver. Sometimes the newer ones have a bug that has not yet been identified.

Also make sure AMD does not have a bug listed for the card. Some cards are not 100% compatible with AMD's front side bus.

You might also slow down the processor in CMOS to see if it makes a diff.

The only other probable cause could be a buggy memory stick. Since you have 2 gig, remove one and try it. If it still does it, replace the one you left in with the one you took out and try it again. If everything acts the same, memory is good. Make sure the timing in CMOS is set to auto until you get all the bugs out. It is not wise to do any over-clocking until everything runs smoothly.

Let me know if this helps.

I have some more ideas, but you should start with these.

thanks, it turned out to be left over pre-installed Norton’s firewall crap. You wouldn’t believe the crap I had to go through to get rid of it all. It was the ccleaner that found it, but I had to go through hell to get it all.
