Well after a three week delay, I finally got my HD DirectTV DIVO and now the remote died.
I will wait a while on HD DVD.

I jumped in with a 1080p TV and DishNet HD. An upgrade to my DVD player with an upconvert to 1080i makes all my current DVDs look fine. I'll wait until the format fight is over and the player prices drop to a reasonable level. My local stores are carrying titles in BluRay and HD-DVD, but I don't see much evidence of turnover of the stock on the shelf. It doesn't help that the store only sells 720p/1080i TV and sells no players for HD-DVD or BluRay. That stuff is available at Circuit City...50 miles north.
When BluRay hits around $299 at Walmart, I'll consider the technology as mainstream.

Looks like Sony wasn’t so dumb in its PS3 strategy.

My old 19" B&W TV I bought in 1981 just died so I upgraded to a 20" color model for less than half I paid in 1981.
I am protesting the 2009 transition to HiDef broadcast through my local Congressman. I won't qualify for one of the free converter box certificates after they shut off the standard definition stations, and that's just unfair.

Customers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time
Well than obviously it isn't big bad Blockbuster who is making the decision, the free market is.
The title is just another case of WalMart Derangement Syndrome.

Maybe someone can clarify for me, but the down side to BLU-RAY, is that it won’t play your old standard DVD movies, and its more expensive than HDDVD.
Not only that, but HDDVD player will play standard DVD’s and bring them up to near HD quality and a HDDVD player is roughly 50% of what a BLU-RAY player cost.
If so, then we should all be pushing the HDDVD format.

Blu-Ray is technologically superior. Among other features, its writable disks will hold substantially more that its competition.
Hello out there! Standaridizing the format will bring more competition, not less, because more manufacturers will be making disks, including blanks for computer storage. Look at the list of companies supporting the two rival formats, and you will see that Blu-Ray has the edge, particularly with the upper end companies (Sony, Apple, and even Dell).
I say, bite the bullet and go with the more advanced technology now.
Go Blu!

Sony has a history of coming out with a competing technology that is better but doesn’t make it due to licensing greed. VHS vs. Beta, Audio Cassette vs 4-track cartridge (anyone even remember the 4 track. I bought one because it was Sony, it died in 2 years (late 60s).)
The porn industry standardized on VHS and Beta died. They are backing the HD-DVD over of the Blue-Ray. Blockbuster has clout that wasn’t there with VHS vs. Beta. I wonder who will win.

Of course it’s being reported on another web site that Sony struck a deal with Blockbuster. Exclusivity deals are common business deals and I’m not surprised Blockbuster would go for it. These are the same guys who wouldn’t stock DVD for the longest time.

What is the difference between the two? Are you saying if I get this 'blu ray' disc, it won't play on an Hd Tv? (not that I have one)
(I'm still waiting for one my old regular tvs to die so I can get a flat tv)

Everyone knows Sony lost the Beta vs VHS war.... That had to leave a mark....
My money says Sony will do everything necessary to win the Blu-Ray vs HD-Dvd war.
A loss in this war would shake consumer confidence in Sony for decades.

I'm kinda liking the pay-per-view. They don't always have the movies I want to see though.
It is nice to not have to go get them or return them (always late too.)

HD-DVD was DEAD and should have stayed Dead.... MS threw some weight behind it at the last minute to revive it in an attempt to harm Sony due to their rivalry in the video game console market and the fact that Sony was making sure Blu-Ray came with every PS3.
The sooner HD-DVD dies, the better off we will all be. Its a horrible kludge. Those “cheap” hd-dvd players don’t even do true 1080p... it was DOA and should have stayed there.
