The MLB playoff picture is now complete. And what a way to complete it. The Padres led 8-6, in the 14th inning, with all time saves leader Trevor Hoffman on the mound...bring on the Phillies, right?

Uh...no.

Details to follow.

Correction - 13 innings.

I don’t think Holliday touched the plate, and he even knew it.

This is why Mariano Rivera is better Trevor Hoffman.

Same here. For the first 2 or 3 seconds the umpire didn't believe he touched it either.

And it was such a classic game, and now it will forever be shrouded in controversy.

“I don’t think Holliday touched the plate, and he even knew it.”

No, it was very clear by the residual HGH left on home plate that Holliday scored that run. What an obvious juice-head.

No doubt - baseball keeps shooting itself in the foot.

Except against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 13th and decisive inning had the first scoring since the top of the 8th inning, when the Padres’ Brian Giles hit a 2 run homer to tie the score at 6. Ironically enough, Giles was on base in the top of the 13th inning, when Hairston hit a two run homer to give the Padres am 8-6 lead.

Then you see...him...Trevor Hoffman, all time saves leader, warming up in the bullpen. With him, a two run lead might as well be six. I told my mother as I conversed with her on the phone, “the only chance the Rockies have is that they are playing this game in Coors Canaveral (sp).”

Sure enough, I turn away to watch Hannity and Cryptkeeper (well, it was really to watch Ann Coulter), and when I turn back, I see Hoffman on the mound, Kaz Matsui on second base, and no one out.

I turn the channel to get the final score of the football game, and when I turn back, the score is tied at 8, courtesy of a double by Tulowitski (scoring Matsui), and a triple by Holliday, scoring Tulowitski.

And still, no one out. This time, I didn’t change the channel.

Some guy named Carroll hits a fly ball to right. The catch is made, Holliday tags at third, comes home at the same time that the ball does, and after what seemed like an eternity, the umpire makes a call.

Safe.

Rockies go wild, beating Hoffman and the Padres, 9-8 in 13 innings.

Upon viewing the TBS replay, I noticed that, while the catcher didn’t tag Holliday before his hand touched the plate...well, actually, Holliday’s hand didn’t touch the plate at all. The catcher’s foot was on the plate, and Holliday’s hand never touched it. (His head bounced off the dirt as he slid by.)

It must have taken about 5-8 seconds for the umpire to make that call of safe.

So the Rockies continue their hot play of late, and the Padres are done. October has started. “Go crazy, folks, go crazy!”

With each passing year I like baseball more and more. But, man-o-man, they gotta figure something out with replay. I have no dog in this hunt — not even a wittle puppy — and I’m miffed that it’s so obvious the call at the plate was so likely flat out wrong.

Oh well. Karma’s always got a canine in the cage and will likely put the Phillies over ‘em in a sweep.

Update: Just saw an umpteenth replay. Who knows? Tough call.

Fun game. The layers, nuance and history of baseball are awesome.

Karma? The Rockies had a home run which was not called one. The karma has already been paid.

Great end run to get to the playoffs. Great year for the Rockies.

Cubs v. Snakes - now would be a good time to put Steve Bartman in Witness Protection...or at least away from the field of play. I’m picking the Snakes, because they’re playing the Cubs.

Phillies v. Rockies - tough to call. (Actually I don’t really care, but since the Rockies gave me the thrill of beating Hoffman, I’ll pull for them).

In the American League:

Angels vs. Indians - I don’t know...homer call, I’ll root for the Angels. Their manager is an ex-Dodger.

Yankees v Bosox - Joe Torre is on his knees thanking God he didn’t have to play the Angels...though this year they might have gotten them.

Obviously these picks are not informed - to be honest, it’s hockey season now, and my (unrealistic) hope is to see the Stanley Cup stay in SoCal (but with a home north of Orange County...at the office supply arena), so once the Angels are out, I really won’t care who wins in baseball. But hey, it’s that time of the year, and it’s a good excuse to meet and eat, and get a little rowdy.

Congrats...I think you guys beat us 6 out of the 7 times you played us (Dodgers) in the last two weeks...but then you guys beat just about everyone you played. Big ups, and good luck!

I didn't realize this about Hoffman the other day: (from Yahoo Sports)

Hoffman (4-5), who has 524 career saves, blew his seventh chance in 49 tries. On Saturday, he was one strike away from clinching a playoff spot when Tony Gwynn Jr. hit a tying triple for Milwaukee, which went on to win 4-3 in 11 innings.

“so once the Angels are out,”

Dream on, Dodger-boy. Another WS trophy is going to join the Stanley Cup in Anaheim.

But you can have your city name back- I still don’t like Moreno sticking the Angels with “Los Angeles”. Somebody ought to give that guy a map with the location of Angel Stadium marked with an X.

Dodger-boy slur aside, I agree with you about the name. I thought it was one of the stupidest moves ever...but hey...the Angels can boast what the Dodgers cannot...a World Series title since Reagan was President, and as many World Series rings in the last 19 years as the Dodgers have had playoff wins - one.

Thank you! My wife (a former Dodger fan and still bragger of the famous Dodger Dog) and I went to Pennsylvania for 2 weeks just when the Rockies went 1 in 9 or something like that and we come back and they had won 10 straight. Blew us away.

We’re hyped here in Denver now.
