Linux users from around the world are filling out the Linux Foundation's desktop survey. But what John Cherry, the foundation's director of global Linux workgroups, wants to know is, "Where are the responses from the North America?"

Linux is much more popular worldwide than it is in the US/north america.
Just ask Netapplications, then ask W3counter. One tracks the US, and one tracks the world.
I don’t know about the world market, but I think the PC market in the US is driven by games. If “Bioshock” can run on a Linux platform, then the Linux userbase will expand. If it doesn’t, the Vista userbase will expand.
I run one Vista box for games and general browsing and one Ubuntu box for visting jiahd sites. LOL. And you are right, if I could get Wine to play more games I’d dump Vista and run 100% Ubuntu. BTW: My Ubuntu systyem is free, never gets viruses and has NEVER crashed.
“and one Ubuntu box for visting jiahd sites”
LOL. Sarcasm noted.
I’m a Linux know-nothing. I switched over from XP. Then I showed my brother Kubuntu. Even he switched over. XP is a thing of the past for both of us. [Neither of us games.]
I run Mepis 6.5 on my work laptop, and on one desktop at home. The other two desktops at home run windows 2000.
Yeah, games make a huge impact on the viability of a platform.
However, so do other apps. Such as photoshop. Tax programs. CAD. And on and on.
I wish GIMP would shoot for universal CMYK support. That would really help out.
I have a family member who has a new laptop, they’ve had it for months and have only used it once or twice.
After getting spammed by ‘allow or deny’s, she allowed it to collect dust.
It’s a shame really. It’s a nice machine.
Maybe they should’ve looked over here at free republic, eh? :-)
You’ve probably seen this, but I’ll post it for general knowledge:

If you buy a Windows version of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, you can download the Linux installation of the game at the above location.
And more than 8-bit color depth? But other than the UI it's hard to complain (though I wish the "Intelligent Scissors" worked better on the Windows version -- and maybe I should check to see if there's a newer version available).
But I'm posting this from my personal Kubuntu machine at home.
This is all based on the assumption that one goes to Desktop Linux.com or other Linux sites on a routine bases, in which I don’t. Ubuntu user here.
Gone to Apples every one. Just my guess. Americans do not think first of cost when buying something.
I’m still in the MS world, but if I wanted an alternative, it would probably be a Mac.
I still run Linux, my firewall, my PC and the wifes PC.
