Joan Kennedy hospitalized for alcohol abuse

Another Kennedy is in trouble with alcohol and the court system.

Joan Kennedy was taken to a Boston hospital over the weekend after caretakers appointed by a Barnstable court decided she was too intoxicated for her own good, according to a report in the Boston Herald today.

The 71-year-old Kennedy, who is the ex-wife of U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital after she became drunk at a social event Friday night, the Herald reported.

Her caretakers were appointed as part of a deal with her children to head off a court battle over her Hyannisport home. She was also under orders from a Barnstable family court judge to refrain from drinking alcohol.

If she breaks the rules of the agreement she can be placed in permanent guardianship by the court and assigned around-the-clock caretakers, according to the Herald.

I wish her well - she seems like a very nice lady who married the wrong person.

Well I hope she’s able to beat the demons that are trying to destroy her. Prayers for a clean and sober outcome.

I watched the movie “Jackie, Ethel, Joan: The Women of Camelot” just last night on TV. In the film, Joan seemed like such a nice, sweet woman while the Swimmer was such a jerk.

The wives loved the prestige and the money...overlooked a lot of things...plus these marriages were often “arranged” and they felt trapped, couldn’t leave.

I’m glad I didn’t come from money or had family that married me into money. I came from a different environment and different times in general. If I had a husband like Ted, he would have had some permanent indentations in his head from repeated blows via the nearest cast iron skillet. Or he would have been dead by now.

The sad thing is that even in divorce, it seems that Joan Kennedy still did not find happiness except that temporary kind from the bottle.

God bless Joan Kennedy.

She has a long history as a public drunk, much like her ex-tubofguts. Other than that I don’t know about her one way or the other, but I do know that the kennedys, as a group, are the most worthless bunch of public parasites this country has ever produced.

She indeed has a serious health problem, obviously.

Who knows if her early days with The Swimmer enhanced her disease or if it would have surfaced anyway.

I wish her a speedy recovery (knowing it is never a total recovery)

My sentiments exactly. Everything you read about her is that she was a gentle, musically gifted, and submissive daughter to her adoring - yet alcoholic - parents. Ted Kennedy was the last person in the world she should have married, and in fact she and father tried to back out of the marriage at one point in the engagement. But ol' Joe blew his top and yelled that the wedding announcement was in all the newspapers and she wasn't going to jilt his son! Tragically, she and her father gave in.

Ted was an incredibly egotistical, thoughtless husband who treated her like dirt. She ran his reelection campaign in 1964 after his airplane crash injury, and he never gave her credit for it. At all times he seemed to sense how vulnerable she was and played on it most cruelly.

She has never recovered after years of valiant attempts. She just wasn't tough enough in her background to be a Kennedy wife.

She used to be pretty and sober at one time, too.

If I recall correctly, this is just the latest of many trips to rehab for her. For example, a few months ago, didn't the neighbors find her sitting semi-nude in the middle of the street stewed to the gills? And didn't that land her in the Betty Ford?

That’s because it wasn’t there. It’s a normal, healthy thing for adult children to try to get control of the major assets of a mentally incompetent parent, before the parent squanders them and leaves her/himSELF penniless. Joan’s condition is such that she could easily wipe out every penny of assets she has just by getting behind the wheel of a car and killing or maiming somebody. Hopefully the court will now make good on its previous word and put her under legal guardianship. She needs to be supervised 24/7 by people with legal authority to control her actions.

One or more of her kids sought legal guardianship a few years back after they caught wind of the fact that she was preparing to sell her (very expensive) Hyannisport home.Knowing the caliber of the Kennedy kids in general and *her* kids in particular (Patrick “Patches” Kennedy,D-Drug & Alcohol Stupor) they were obviously trying to protect their inheritance.
