Anyone know who wrote this? (vanity)

Looking for the author of the following:

"For those who manned the battle line the bugle whispers low--- and Freedom has a taste and price the protected never know..."

All I can find so far is "Author Unknown". There are hints that it was Walt Whitman, but as yet I have been unable to find it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Haven’t confirmed this from a literary site but author may be General Patton:

Just an FYI: I searched thru Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass” for just the word “freedom” (on www.bartleby.com); couldn’t find this quotation or anything resembling it. (Like the pit bull terriers on the sweatshirt I’m wearing, I’m not letting this one go yet! Please, please ping me if you get a definitive answer.)
