Looks like Amazon has already exhausted its stock of Kindle ebook readers. Has anyone gotten one? Any opinions you'd like to share?
At first glance I thought it might be another hokey ebook reader, but today saw that my Amazon shopping cart has about 20 hardcopy books, and blog/RSS feeds on Flock are well over 50. It might be much more appealing to have all of those books and blogs on a single reader, *away from the computer*, and designed for simplicity and transparency.
Amazon seems to be building its Kindle offerings at lightening speed.
Thoughts?
I’ve read reviews of it being designed poorly... the buttons at the edge keep getting pressed when you change your grasp on the device...
Plus the Kindle won’t accept generic ebook files... only DRM protected file. I’d rather have one that accepts PDFs also.
Have not heard good things...for what it’s worth.
Sony also has an ebook reader device.
“Id rather have one that accepts PDFs also.”
Same here. Is there a good one out there?
Yea, Bookeen’s CyBook mentions these formats:
Document formats: MobipocketTMPRC, PalmDoc, HTML, TXT, PDF
But do check them from the company website... I fished this out from Engadget.com
Heck, go with any good Windows Pocket PC and you can have eBook, pdf, Word, etc.
There’s another, albeit more expensive brand, the iLiad. This one works on Linux, and allows third-party applications to run on it.
Read somewhere that it lists for 650 dollars.
I don’t have one but would love to get one. But the price point of $400 is about three times too high to climb that bell curve of market saturation. They need to make it a loss leader...you know: give’em the razor, sell’em the blades.
Those technologies use power whenever on, but these new devices only use power per "page turn." The screen technology is different.
I read this the other day.
I’ve been thinking about one of these things and I think the Sony appears to be better.
bump
In that case, I have a convertible notebook. The colour fullsize display can be rotated and folded flat on the base, making it great for reading the occasional book in page-length format:
The Sony boasts the additional virtue of being $100 less.
I have been interested also, so I am bumping the thread for further comments.
mmmm, another technological solution for a non technological problem. What’s wrong with a book? I have to have my laptop with me anyway so why not read on it? when they get flash downloads of lots of content for really low prices I’ll be impressed.
A Kindle? are you trying to start something? :)
Give ‘em the printer, sell ‘em the cartridges.
The Kindle can subscribe to blogs......
How about FR???
Personally, I still like books; hard covers or the large trade paperbacks preferably.
I read a lot of newspapers articles on line and of course on Free Republic, but now and then I still like to curl up in a warm bed on a cold rainy night after a long hard day with a real hard cover book, a hot cup of tea and my kitties snuggled up close to me and purring mental comfort food.
There is something about turning pages that I find much more comforting to my soul than scrolling and clicking with a mouse and staring at a screen.
I also love going to brick and mortar book stores, the big ones like Barnes and Nobles but also the little independent and off the beaten track ones in the city or at my local libary. I like being in places were other people who like to read gather and I love the look and smells of book stores. I can get lost in a bookstore for hours new books and used ones.
Besides I also like collecting interesting and unusual book makers and I also like displaying the books Ive read on my many book shelves all around my house it makes a statement about who I am. I can also get back in touch with old friends any time I want or share them with other friends.
I have several friends with whom we often share books. We give books weve read to each other and then pass them on freely to other friends or donate them to worthy causes.
There is a really cool independent coffee shop I like to frequent that has a free lending library. They invite you to take a book from their shelves and donate one if youd like.
Sometimes on a Sunday morning I go there, get a caramel macchiato and curl up on the couch in front of their gas fire place and just read. If the book doesnt hold my interest, I can always just people watch another great pastime as someone who is interested in people and likes to muse and write about my observations.
Electronic media keeps me informed and up to date with quick snips of information but for a truly deep and spiritual experience, there is nothing better than a good book; one I can hold and touch and caress.
