There are numerous reasons that this technology could fail — but, that doesn’t put it in the “perpetual motion machine” category.

Extracting energy from hydrocarbon sources is pretty standard fare. The process, as described in the article does not require any departure from standard physics

They called it destructive distillation when I was in high school chemistry class. Of course that was back in the days when public schools in this country actually taught useful things.
