I was driving home tonight and saw this, was amazed, so thought I'd share it.

I live in the country, no city lights, and the view of this was awesome.

It’s as bright as the brightest star, Sirius

Sounds Sirius.

Maybe my luck will change.

I’m on a 40 year losing streak.

Maybe tommorrow is the day things become great.

The Moon is actually going to occult Mars for viewers in Europe at around 4am (tomorrow) local time.

I saw this too, and I also live in the country. Sirius is the only magnitude 1 star in the northern hemisphere. The Moon and Mars were in a line from Orion’s belt through the red star, Betelgeuse. It was very unusual. I am a celestial navigator and have never before seen this.

LOL

We were posting on the same article at the same time but on different threads. I saw it as well this evening. I watched the moon rise then saw mars next to it. It was spectacular. In fact, Mr G took some pictures of it.

Don’t think I can bundle up quite enough to want to go fishing though. I will make some nice hot chocolate however!

Enjoy it while it lasts

Asteroid May Strike Mars in January 2008
According to Space.com, scientists at the Near Earth Object Program at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory believe a newly discovered asteroid has a 1 in 75 chance of hitting Mars on January 30.

I saw this as well tonight. What a neat treat to see. I amazed at all of the astronomical phenomena I’ve been fortunate enough to see in the past five years or so. Many of them are once in a liftime or really infrequent.

Thanks for posting.

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

“Why is Mars sometimes bright and sometimes faint?”

Because they switched from incandescent bulbs to fluorescents.

Actually, even with some city lights, you can see Mars tonight next to the moon. Until this article, I didn;t know it was Mars.

Now that I’ve seen it, I no longer desire to go there.

Thanks for posting this.

Just went outside and looked. No city light interference out here in the country. The view was awesome. The stars look like diamonds on black velvet.

God is giving us a heck of a show tonight.

Bright and clear in the 'burbs as well, the moon is close to overhead now.

Mars/Moon should be close Monday night as well. Thanks for posting, would've missed it otherwise.

Just after 7 PM, MST

The 'dust spec to the right of the moon (3 o'clock position) is Mars.

Looking at it now from over here. That Ol moon is shining big & bright. And Mars is twinkling red just above it.
