I have noticed various people going from thread to thread telling people why not to vote for certain candidates. While thats fine I would like to know why Republicans should support thier candidate.
I think this thread would be usefull and please feel free to refute lies and distortions posted by various supporters.
Electability is a weak argument for your candidate so please give some reasons other than that.
As a Fred supporter myself it seems Huck and McCain supporters can only tell everyone why they shouldn't vote for Mitt or Fred but I would like to know why I should support your candidate instead of mine.
There is no such thing as the perfect candidate, but there has to be someone with a consistent underling philosophy that I can accept.
That’s why I am supporting Fred. I support his view on American Federalism, not socialism or nanny-statism, or Rockefeller Republicanism.
Mine likes cheese!
This is really, really, really complicated so pay attention...
You need to have a degree in nuclear physics to understand it...
Rudy, Mitt, McCain and especially Huckabee are liberals.
Fred is a conservative.
Any questions?
The GOP is composed of multiple factions, each with its own priorities. Unforntunately this election cycle, too many members of the various factions in our coalition are seeking their own faction's ideal candidate, without regard to the opinions of other factions. The only result of such an attitude will be the destruction of the coalition that is the GOP.
We must unite behind a candidate that is at least acceptable to all the major factions, and who also has a reasonable chance to run an effective, winning campaign in the general election.
United we stand, divided we fall. Thompson may not be your ideal candidate, but he can unite the GOP coalition better than any other candidate. A united coalition is a strong coaltion, whose members will be energized to work towards the election of their consensus candidate, and go to the polls to vote for him on election day.
1) He is the most conservative candidate in the race. He has a 92% lifetime rating, American Conservative Union.
2) He is the “National Security” candidate. He served with the 173rd Airborne and the 75th Army Rangers in Vietnam, and was, most recently, the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee in the House of Representatives. Duncan Hunter knows defense.
3) He is a strong supporter of missile defense.
4) He’s a strong supporter of Israel.
5) He was responsible for building the fence along the Mexico-U.S. border in San Diego. That double fence cut smuggling (people and drugs) over 90%.
6) He opposes the McCain-Kennedy Amnesty bill in the Senate.
7) He is a co-sponsor of the Fair Tax.
8) He was the co-sponsor of a bill that would require a 2/3 majority in Congress to raise taxes.
9) He is a strong proponent of fair trade and will fix some of the bad trade deals that have been made by previous administrations in order to keep high paying jobs in America.
10) He pledges to appoint originalist judges like Antonin Scalia.
11) He has a 100% Pro-Life rating from National Right to Life.
12) He believes that marriage is between a man and a woman. He supports a Constitutional Amendment to protect marriage.
13) He is a strong defender of the 2nd Amendment who has an A+ National Rifle Association rating.
14) He supports school choice.
The position of POTUS is the biggest executive position in the world. A candidate should have large-scale executive experience. The only three who have ANY executive experience are Mitt, Rudy and Huck. Mitt and Rudy are good candidates except for their liberal social positions. Huck is the only long-time social conservative who has also says that he will be a fiscal conservative as President even though he wasn’t always as a Republican Gov in a Dem state.
Pro-life
Pro 2nd Amendment
Flat tax or cut tax
anti-gay marriage
Anti amnesty, would punish sanctuary cities, build the fence
Supports the troops and their mission
Well, I think I understand that, Eric, and they are all liberals if you “recenter” the GOP base. I think Romney IS an ecomonic conservative, and Huckabee is a social conservative, Rudy is neither, and McCain is a proven RINO.
Which would leave Thompson.
Okay, get him to win South Carolina.
There is no perfect guy out there. Fred Thompson is however the most consistently conservative candidate in the running.
Name your issue and you won’t find a candidate with a chance at the nomnination that is more conservative on it. Pro-Life? National Right to Life has endorsed Fred.
Thats what I am talking about. Thanks for your simple response concerning Hunter.
And that was just for starters!
Rudy is an economic supply side conservative and a foreign policy conservative on steroids. He’s just unacceptable to the social conservatives.
To the socons credit, at least here on FR, they have rejected Huck. For the same reasons that libertarians like myself turned their back on Rudy....Simply out of respect for the other members of the party base.
Only one man can unite the party’s base...FRED THOMPSON.
I’m hoping for a brokered convention where wiser and cooler heads will prevail. Judging by Iowa, people are just too f’ing stupid to vote.
I have decided to support Mitt Romney.
1. He understands economic principles. I think we have some rough sledding ahead in terms of our economy, and he has expertise in turning around losing propositions (businesses, Olympics, state of MA economy).
2. His economic principles are basically conservative.
3. I believe that his change from pro-choice to pro-life is real and permanent.
4. I think that he will take a reasonably strong stance against granting amnesty (or otherwise known as “not amnesty because they have to pay a fine”).
5. He is mature, even-tempered, and very intelligent —important qualities for handling international affairs
Don’t judge ANYTHING by Iowa.
8) He was the co-sponsor of a bill that would require a 2/3 majority in Congress to raise taxes.
Are you sure about #7? I thought he said he doesn't support Fair Tax?
Did the 2/3 tax bill ever pass? If not, does Fred intend to push it as President?
Fred Thompson has a strong but stable temperament, strong on courage, highly intelligent and has deep insight. Thompson is minimally self-serving, which helps him to choose right over wrong. Conservative with conservative background.
I think this was a post supporting Huckabee, not Thompson.
