Of course, next month there could be an asteroid impact. Or a supernova explosion reaching earth from a short distance away. Or a supervolcano explosion. Which, although it might not completely kill off the human race, could well set the human race back a long, long ways and still kill off 99.9 percent of us.

And the flip side is that space-travelling beings could be so far evolved above us that we would not perceive their nature, just as a bacterium in our gut does not grasp the nature of the being that they inhabit.

All of which, I believe, will be attributed to 8 years of Bush/Hitler, a Republican do-nothing Congress and woefully inadequate public sector spending.

Needless to say, women and minorities will be hardest hit. Hopefully, Michele Obama will be taken out by the first impact.

I would be content if she'd just stick a cork in it.

Failing that, an asteroid will have to suffice.

The ‘other’ flipside would be that we haven’t found anything yet because we’ve made it further than anyone else.
