What you are calling “ground hornets” are probably yellow jackets. They are the ones that make nests in the ground, usually in/under the stumps of dead trees or shrubs. I made the same mistake, but the doctor and nurses corrected me when they treated me and prescribed the Epi-pen. The Doc seem to think it was important to make the distinction, something about different types of venom between them. All I know is that they almost took me out.
I also learned that when they sting, especially if you swat or smash them when they sting you, they leave a pheromone marker and other members of the hive zone in on it and sting that spot repeatedly.
