A while back, Mr. melissa_in_ga and I decided to put some shelving in our basement and start a stockpile of food for hard times. We never got around to it until today. Bought the shelving at Lowe's on the cheap, and scoured the Publix and Kroger circulars for deals, made a list and headed out.
After marveling at the huge lines wrapping around the Kroger gas station and onto Peachtree Parkway (we found a station and filled our tanks yesterday, thank goodness), I went into the store. Folks, I was amazed at the number of people in both Kroger and Publix. It seemed they were all doing the same thing I was - stocking up against hard times. I've only seen grocery lines like these when, here in the south, they forecast a few flurries of snow. A lot of the BOGOs were already out, and a lot of the shelf space for sale item store brands were empty.
Is this happening in your neck of the woods? We're stir fry, fresh veggie, grill fish type people, but won't bat an eye at processed and canned food stored in the basement if food prices keep going up. My MIL asked why we bought so much, and I told her we were afraid of what might happen down the road, bailouts, NObama, etc.
I'm just wondering if this is happening where you are, and if you are hedging bets against long-term hardship.
Sounds like it’s just in your neck of the woods.
No stock piling going on here ... or around us.
Any one else seeing hoarding or shortages?
Not me but I’m always prepared anyway.
I’m still working on my Y2K stash...
Haven’t noticed anything beyond gas lines but will be aware and plan accordingly. Time to restock anyway.
I’ve been ‘hedging’ since 9/11. I have heard about lines to get gas, but have not run into any. As for my gas, I have not let my van get below 1/2 empty since 9/11. Prices are going down some around here. ($3.41 at WM)
No shortages or stock piling.
We did see some of this going on just before 2000. In fact some went crazy with socking up and hoarding stuff. Haven’t seen it since then.
I have stocked up on 50-pound bags of rice and beans from Sam's Club, but that was a while ago.
I dunno. I went to church and the saw a matinee performance of an opera today.
I need to buy lead!
Gas is down around $3.60 in my neck of the Michigan woods.
Went to Costgo today. It was busy but nothing out out of the ordinary.
I was at Wal-Mart last night. The guy ahead of me was buying tons of baby formula and diapers. He told the cashier his wife just had triplets. So I guess he wasn’t hoarding—just buying for the next couple of days. Other than that, it seemed like a normal Saturday night at the store.
We were doing that routine two weeks ago, before Hurricane Ike.
I think the gas lines back east are a bit manufactured due to blends... not strictly downed refining capacity. Those EPA regulations kill us.
kiddin'...
Until now, my hubs and I and a friend or two seemed to be the only ones interested in having supplies laid back. Now the stores can’t keep canning supplies in stock. It seems as though everyone is putting things back.
It’s only wise in these uncertain times.
Gas lines get people jittery. In the 70s when Carter screwed up the energy supplies, the same think happened. It’s not how many miles per gallon your car get, it’s how many miles you can go on one tank. I filled the “big tank” up, and siphoned gas to use for our small car. They wouldn’t allow cans to be filled.
States with “no gouging” price controls have gas lines, think about that.
We always keep some can goods, hurricanes are unpredictable. Just have a good rotation.
I thought W cancelled the blends due to Ike.
