Senator John McCain described the Red Sox as his "sentimental favorite" to win the World Series, shunning playoff teams in the crucial swing states of Wisconsin, Florida, and Pennsylvania.
"I still kinda like the Red Sox," McCain said in an interview this morning on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" when asked about the Major League Baseball playoffs. "I have a sentimental favorite, look, I think they're going to do well now that my Diamondbacks have blown it."
McCain added that the Los Angeles Dodgers should also go deep into October because they "have some pretty strong pitching."
"I think it's very possible that both of those teams, both the Dodgers and the Red Sox could surprise everybody," McCain said.
The Arizona Republican made no mention of the Milwaukee Brewers, Tampa Bay Rays, or Philadelphia Phillies. McCain has long been supported by injured Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling.

Just one more reason to vote for McCain....
At least McCain is no longer rooting for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Asked for his opinion, 0bama said, “I’ve got a team too! I think the the Nitally Lions will win the pennant!”
I’m from Boston, and my sentimental favorite is/are the Cubs.
I mean it has only been a hundred years.
Well, he’s lucky the Rockies didn’t make it this year, otherwise I would reconsider my support.:)
Although I am favoring Tampa Bay.
Just one more reason NOT to vote for McCain.
Sentimental favorite? Who is he kidding. They are the new evil empire.
If he were looking for a “sentimental” favorite, he miht have thought about the Cubs, who have waited 100 years now. I figure it’s their turn.
Of course, until last year, they had never lost the World Series in a year ending in 07.
They still haven’t. They didn’t get to the World SEries last year. You vhe to get to the Series to lose the Series.
I was a Sox fan growing up in the 60’s and suffered with them through horrible crushing losses. I’ve earned my spurs. If they’re the new evil empire, then call me Krushchev and pour me some vodka...!
(laughing hysterically at your post)
Yes, indeed. It is (finally) good to be a Red Sox fan. As a child, my first Red Sox game was in 1967 - the game that they won that clinched the pennant (no one believes me, but trust me, when you get to Heaven you can check with my Grandmother - she was there, too) and have been smitten ever since.
I especially love the business aspect to the administration of the Red Sox organization. They rely upon development of younger talent in their minor league system. They are patient with that talent once they reach the major league level - sending prospects back down for further training if they stumble. It is a system based upon meritocracy . They have a great respect for tradition, evidenced by their devotion to Fenway Park. By the way, if you haven’t visited, please do. It is most especially a national landmark over and above some place that the Red Sox play 86 times a year. When you visit for a night game there is something magical about emerging from the dark, dank underbelly of the stadium to the grandeur of the insanely green grass and the contrasting red of the base paths. The howls of the vendors hawking hot dogs (ummm).
O! It is good to be an American!
Thanks for the reply. Grew up in New Jersey. Saw my first Red Sox Yankee games in 1966 (Sox swept a doubleheader in the Bronx). Saw the first of many Red Sox games at Fenway in 1974. I was a freshman at UConn, and my friends and I would drive up to Fenway and watch Yaz, Dewey, Rico, et al. Saw a couple of games near the end of ‘74 and may have seen Rice or Lynn play, but don’t recall seeing them....
Yes, should have worded that differently. Until last year, the Cubs had never not won the World Series in a year ending in 07 (since the World Series was invented).
Look at the Dodgers--they're playing great because the arrival of Manny Ramirez has made every other hitter in the lineup play better. That plus reasonably stable pitching means the Dodgers will go very far in the playoffs. As for the Red Sox, this is a team used to the pressure of the playoffs, and they have a great mix of experience and young players that could take them right back into the World Series.
The prospect of Ramirez facing his old team in the World Series is no longer far-fetched, in my humble opinion.
Here’s the problem with the Cubs—the psychology of the “Curse” against the team conspires against them. That’s why when the Red Sox and White Sox both finally broke their curses a few years ago, it completely changed the atmosphere around these teams.
There are no "turns" in baseball . . . you're either good enough to win it, or you're not. And it looks like the Dodgers (i.e., West Coast Red Sox) are going to wipe out the Cubbies in a sweep.
Looking even better with that humbling of the Cubbies yesterday. I would love to see a Red Sox-Dodgers World Series; not only to see Ramirez back in Boston, but Derrek Lowe, too.
I was a huge Manny fan before he blatantly mailed it in this season and dogged it.
A Dodgers-Red Sox World Series would get great ratings because 1) the Dodgers are a huge sports draw in the Los Angeles area and 2) there is a huge fan base for the Red Sox.
It would also return Joe Torre to Fenway as well. Easily one of the classiest men in the game.
