Group: Soft Plastic Toys Are Health Risk
WebMD Childrens' Health ^ | 11/25/08 | Todd Zwillich

Nov. 25, 2008 -- A consumer watchdog group is urging parents to avoid buying soft plastic toys this holiday season because of a risk that the toys may contain toxic chemicals.

Toys containing the chemicals, called phthalates, can no longer be manufactured or imported after February 2009, according to a product safety law that passed Congress over the summer.

But the group says the Consumer Product Safety Commission is allowing the toy industry to circumvent the law. The agency wrote a letter last week telling manufacturers they can still sell their existing stocks of phthalate-containing toys even after the ban takes effect in February.

"They're giving the industry a loophole," says Liz Hitchcock, a public health advocate for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (U.S. PIRG).

Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to soften vinyl and other plastics. Congress banned use of the chemicals in toys because of evidence they can have health effects including early puberty, reproductive defects, and lower sperm counts in boys.

I’m giving my kids the “Big Bag o’ Broken Glass”. It’s very popular.

>>>I’m giving my kids the “Big Bag o’ Broken Glass”.<<<

We always had baseballs or BBguns. We made our own broken glass.

Yes, I survived my wood-burning set and my chemistry set just fine. I don’t even remember any warning labels on them.

I prefer "Chainsaw Teddy". :-)

Jeez, kids these days are safened to death. My kid prefers to play with blocks, a ball of some sort, and sticks...any one of which is *FAR* more dangerous than some imagined issue with some chemical.

He'll likely get a zillion toys for XMas this year, then go outside and hit a ball with a stick. I could pick up a bag of them in the backyard, wrap them up, and he'd be in 7th heaven.

From Wikipedia (lazy but here it is anyway): The Fund for Public Interest Research Group, the national canvassing organization created by the State PIRGs, works to build membership for several other national non-profit lobby groups, including: the State PIRGs, the State Environment groups, the Human Rights Campaign and the Sierra Club.

More lefties wearing different T-shirts trying to fool the public and ride the free publicity provided by a bored, biased and/or clueless MSM as they once again attempt to ride the Christmas PR wave for free.

from their website:

"U.S.PIRG is working to achieve campaign finance reform by enforcing tough campaign contribution limits, creating systems of public financing, and enacting lasting lobby reform."

they left off one line:

It has been proved that 100 % of all babies born eventually die! Therefore, doesn’t that make abortion a justified way to save babies the agony of life and living by having them die early? (the next justification for abortions by the pro-abort maniacs.)

Just how did I survive childhood on a farm in MN?

I rode my bike all over the countryside without a helmet. We had a long steep driveway and I would see how fast I could go and make the corner.....that did not work out in my favor....

My dad took me for rides in the bucket of the tractor.

I used to play with my BB gun and actually shoot things and when I was older my brother would take me target shooting with my dads 22. My brother did get shot but not by me......

On a dare from a neighbor I climbed on the back of a steer....that did not last real long far less than 8 secs....

I built forts by stacking hay bales.....gee they could have collapsed on me...

spent hours in the tire swing and jumping off of it into a pile of leaves....potential to fx something

climbed countless trees....another potential fx

The evidence is thin but the reason we see these toys is because they were concocted to replace latex (rubber) toys because of the rather recent determination that some people are allergic to latex.

The rules demand that toys cause no harm yet there is no practical way to define harm.

They should rename themselves the Public Research Interest Group for the PRIGS they are.

PIRGS are absolute retards. They are wrong so often that it’s quicker to simply be for everything they are against and vice versa. Idiots.
