Buckleys Loved and Loathed
New York Post ^ | December 1, 2008

Christopher Buckley - whose famous parents, William F. and Pat Buckley, died within months of each other after 57 years of marriage - is coming out with a book about them, "Losing Mom and Pop," in May - and it isn't going to be all sweetness and light.

"Writing this book may have been simply a way of spending more time with my parents before finally letting them go," Buckley, 56, tells Vanity Fair's Bob Colacello in the magazine's January issue.

"I honestly had no intention of writing about them. But I'm a writer, and when the universe hands you material like this, it would seem an act of conscious omission not to do something about it. It spilled out of me. I wrote it in 40 days - no biblical associations intended."

William F. Buckley Jr. was the author of 55 books, the founder of the National Review, a syndicated columnist and the host of PBS' "Firing Line" for 30 years. Pat Buckley, from one of the richest families in Canada, was a pillar of high society whose influence peaked when their friends Ronald and Nancy Reagan were ensconced in the White House.

Yet more proof that enlightenment doesn’t strike twice in the same place.

the movie of his book, Thank You For Smoking, was excellent.

His trashing of conservatives and Palin, however, proves he is a Dooosh bag.

“...when the universe hands you material like this...”

Absolutely inane.

Christopher Buckley is simply the new Ron Reagan.

Christopher Buckley knew he was venturing into treacherous territory when he endorsed Barack Obama: "It's a good thing my dear old mum and pup are no longer alive. They'd cut off my allowance," he wrote.

More proof of what Ben Franklin said about the sons of great men-—they are only half what their parents were. In Chris Buckley’s case, both parents must have passed on their recessive genes.

Okay, having read that item, between Christo and Gore Vidal...Gore is still by far in more dire need of a buttkicking.

Christopher Buckley doesn’t get it. Those of us who read and admired Bill Buckley did so because of what he wrote and how he wrote it. His flaws as a parent and person are totally irrelevant.

Maybe the folks cut sonny out of the will. He’s sure being a brat about something. Maybe he and Gore Vidal are an item.

Maybe this comment could be respected somewhat if Chris had had the guts to write about Mom and Dad while they were alive and had the chance to defend themselves. It’s funny how this writer has the burning need to write about this material the universe has handed him only after his inheritance is secure and the parents aren’t around to contradict him.

Wonder if Chris will mention the infamous exchange bteween William F. & that insufferable scrawny slut, Gore Vidal...

Buckley: "I'm for ostracizing people who egg on other people to shoot American Marines and other American soldiers..."

and,

"Now listen, you queer. Stop calling me a crypto Nazi, or I’ll sock you in your goddamn face and you’ll stay plastered."

Although I’m confident C. Buckley is a very bright fellow, few would give a rip about him — or even have heard OF him — if his name were Christopher Smith.
