Great Dane Helps Owner Survive SUV Crash (NM-Doggie rescue story)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | December 17, 2008 | T.J. Wilham

Posted on 12/17/2008 7:12:01 AM PST by CedarDave

Elwood Cardon was hanging upside down. He was pinned against the steering wheel of his SUV, which had plunged off a snow-covered mountain road. His spine was cracked, his limbs were freezing and there was no one in sight.

The 82-year-old retired architect prayed to God to take his life.

But Baby wouldn't let that happen.

Cardon's 5-year-old Great Dane curled up next to him to keep him warm, licked him, snuggled with him and made several trips back and forth looking for help.

After the sun set 10 hours later, Baby was able to get the attention of a nearby homeowner.

The dog led the woman to Cardon, and hours later La Cueva Volunteer Fire Department was able to pull him from his crushed SUV.

Six days later, Cardon was released from the hospital and allowed to return to his mountain home in Jemez Springs with a walker and neck brace.

"It's amazing. I didn't think she could reason like that," Cardon said. "When she was a pup, she tore into everything. She was 'that damn dog.' Hell, now I would set a place for her at the table."

Cardon was diagnosed five years ago with terminal colon cancer. He had been staying with his daughter the past few months in Albuquerque while he underwent several surgeries and physical therapy.

Fed up with the treatment, on Dec. 4 Cardon decided it was time to go home to the house he built himself 14 years ago, and he told his family.

"They tried to keep me from coming," he said. "But, I was bullheaded and stubborn. I wanted to come to the best place on Earth. "This is where I want to die."

Didn't happen that day; his dying that is, thanks to the dog. From the EMS captain: "It [the wreck] was in an area that was not heavily traveled. There are only a couple residents in that area, and only one that lives there full time. We would have eventually found him, but the dog certainly saved his life."

COURTESY WILSON FAMILY/JOURNAL
Baby is a hero these days after the dog helped her owner get rescued. Elwood Cardon had been in a car accident, with no one around to help, until Baby persuaded a nearby neighbor to follow her to the wreckage. Baby, incidentally, ate the medal a family member had made for her.

Yep. I’ve never met a Great Dane that wasn’t just a big lug and friendly as can be. They are also some of the very most attractive of dogs, but don’t live anywhere near long enough (true of most dogs, but especially Danes).

My son-in-law used to have two Danes. The male used to open the pantry door with his mouth, retreive Campbell soup cans and open them with his teeth to suck out the yummy goodness.

Seeing that picture reminded me of a chihuahua and great dane I saw years ago in a Washington state store parking lot. I was sitting in the vehicle waiting on my husband, when a couple drove up in an extended cab 3/4 ton pickup.

There was a chihuahua in the front seat and a great dane in the back seat. The couple rolled the windows down a bit and went into the store. From the moment they exited the truck the great dane began whining pitifully and whimpering after them like a baby (may have been a big puppy! ha.), but the little chihuahua growled and barked like a big dog. It was an amusing sight and I couldn’t help but chuckle at them.
