Should Police Power be limited???

In my personal opinion I believe that the Police have a quota and are not looking out to keep streets safe in most occasions but looking to bring money into the general fund. You get a ticket and then you start getting advertisements from lawyers. You pay the lawyer and the lawyer still has you pay a minor fine after he talks to the judge who he's friends with...

My point this whole thing is a scam to bring in money...there is a balance of power issue and its just used to bring in revenue...why not have a point system that goes on your license record ( like a credit score that affects your insurance costs) instead of monetary punishments cut spending and stop harassing law abiding citizens for petty offenses that your being trapped into by things like speed traps??

I've had a similar situation with the Police. I thought the right side of the street was blocked off. I stopped waited for somebodies directions and nobody gave any even though there was a police car there. There were illegal immigrant workers blocking the street with one of those cement dropping trucks. So i began to go on the left side of the cones thinking that was the proper way to go...

Next thing you know the cop knocks hard on my window is yelling and cursing at me...I then tell the officer...why weren't you there giving directions like you were supposed to be...he told me to go back and get out of here....i'm getting ready to go through and he reads my lips as i for some reason say stupid freaking liberals which he wasn't supposed to hear....he then tells me okay F you your getting tickets now.....

I call my co worker to see if she has a camera phone as I wanted to take a picture of the area to show the judge that there was no sign and no clear indication of where to go...the officer says get the f off the phone ...are you recording me? I told the officer should I have a reason to? I hung up

As the officer comes back with my 2 tickets for one offense I politely ask him why he has to be so rude and and that i've always supported police when guys like al sharpton give them trouble and that he's there to protect and serve not scare the crap out of people. He tells me to shut the f up...and says okay you can go now

as i'm getting ready to leave he says oh wait hold up buddy i've got more tickets that i forgot to give you...(at this point I realize he's just trying aggravate me)

as he comes back with my ticket I tell him sir God sees everything and there is always karma and you shouldn't treat people bad...his face turns red and angry and he asks are you f'ing threating me? Mind you i'm calm and have not raised my voice at all and i'm scared...he asks me to step out of the vehicle and tells me to move towards the police car...he then begins to cuff me and twists my arm saying (oh so your resisting arrest huh) i wasn't doing anything i knew that he could kill me if he wanted so i didn't move.

Throws me in the car continues to curse at me saying "who the f do you think you are" "you think i'm going to let a young punk like you tell me how to do my job" gets into the other side of the vehicle and slaps me while i'm cuffed. and he comes out of the vehicle and says i'm searching your f'ing vehicle...he finds 2 of my saint prayer cards and he yells out f*** your stupid religious crap

I was incarcerated for 20 hrs and before i was moved to the jail the judge said i was charged for resisting arrest (a lie) and threating to kill an officer( which is lauguable because he outweighs me by like 150 lbs and has a gun next to him...i would have to be clinically insane...

thankfully i have family in the police and i got everything dropped...but it was a terrible ordeal that was completely unnecessary and an abuse of power

Should Police Power be limited???

Yes. By the Bill of Rights. And we should end the failed drug war and all of the corollary policies that went along with it, like warrantless searches due to no "expectation of privacy" and asset forfeiture laws.

I hear the best way to beat a DUI rap is to plead “broke”.

It was that fight and amass lawyer fees and having to sue the officer and the county to get back what i spent on defending myself...

the officer agreed to drop the charges

I’m sensitive to the dangerous and difficult job that our nation’s law enforcement personnel have. That said, I do think there is a culture, stronger is some places than others, that allows police to trample civil rights at will - civil rights of black, white asian and latino. Probably won’t be a popular post on FR. Sorry!

I respect the job that officers due and that the state has a monopoly on force...but the ticket system is flawed and its just used to bring in revenue and officers are not out there looking to keep us safe but out there looking to meet their quotas to enlarge government. Its all a scam

“Fixing” stuff for relatives is against the law. Maybe that’s one of the reasons you have so little respect for the law. My solution? Turn in the family member... if you want to make things better in your community, that’s a good place to start.

It does seem to be more of an issue in the big cities. On the other hand, since I decided to quit drinking and doing stupid crap I haven’t had anything but friendly contact with police that I initiated.

Self-inflicted injuries ought to be punished as such, and they were in your case.

You ran into a cop who was just looking for someone like you to take his anger out on, and you gave him every excuse to give you the works. And he did.

You have family who are cops so you ought to know better. Some cops are pricks and they have too much power and you’re not going to be able to change that at the curbside when you are under his control. Best thing to do is to smile politely and say nothing and do exactly as your told immediately and without argument. Save the lectures for when you can have the odds slightly more in your favor.

I don't doubt there are quotas. I have done my best to stop speeding so that I am not forced to kick into the state coffers.

I wanted to fight and i knew i was going to win...but my cousin kept telling me that it would drag on...you could lose and then owe a ton of money...let me talk to the officer

In my heart i wanted to fight what the officer did and i also couldn’t afford the lawyer at the time as i was just getting out of college...it was a tough decision but i was given the opportunity to make it go away with no risk...

sometimes i regret not fighting it

and the alternative was suing the county for a ton of money which i’m not crazy about...

The guy who arrested you deserves the term “pig”. Cops are part of the government. Just like congress they must be watched and should be bitch smacked when they violate people’s rights. He works for you not the other way around. You are free to criticize him. He should imprisoned for false arrest and told when he can pee by the bully prison guards. See how he likes being bullied.

My mom got a ticket in the mail saying she parked somewhere illegally. She was never there. Mayor’s Daley’s traffic enforcers. Like a mobster’s flunkies. Disgusting disgrace to “serve and protect”. It’s not serve and protect and extort money for the Mayor.

Well he was just fortunate. His way of getting out of that is just more evidence of the corruption rampant in city judicial systems. You (not you personally) would have to be a complete moron to further empower any level of government in any capacity. I say de-fund it, fire most of the basturds and start over with a dog catcher and barney fife to run the top ten biggest cities in the country. Yet the voters in this country consistently vote to add new and exciting restrictions on their liberty. Many conservatives on FR do it in the name of law and order. Every time you add a restriction, or pass dollars from the private sector to the public sector we lose liberties. But most don’t care. Clinton won conservative votes with his 100,000 new cops on the street routine. I just groaned.
