Finally said to heck with it and rented a rig to do the duty. Still left equipment behind that I'll have to get later on.
Drove over 1100 miles straight the first day. Right now we have been stuck in North Dakota for 2 days as Mother Nature shut down all crossings into Mn! Not to mention the blizzard we encountered (and another on the way as we wait out the flooded river crossings!). Saw multiple overturned rigs/cars on the way mainly due to crosswinds in excess of 80 mph... almost got upended a couple of times ourselves.
Have checked road conditions from Canada to Iowa and the Rivers have it all blockaded, we are hopeful something changes our fortunes and soon! I had planned to be at our Redoubt by now, but Ya Can't Fool with Motha Nature! Thanks for your Prayers! That's probably what's kept our rig safe through all of this so far! Will update when we finally reach our destination!
BUMP for personal use!
Dear Granny or anyone else smarter than me , I need some advise because or circumstances I will use new gardening methods. I’m going to grow tomatoes upside-down in 5 gal/ pails, can I grow 2 plants per pail or only 1. should I use a special water retaining dirt or regular top soil (the garden is only going to be checked once a week.
What type of containers do you all use for long-term storage of items like flour, sugar, salt, wheat, grain, etc. I have gone online and looked at buckets with lids but they are very expensive-especially the lids.

Self Reliant/Survivalist ping list
We were on vacation back during Blue Law times. There was nothing open on Sunday. We were starving. We finally found a grocery store open so I ran in to get a couple cans of pork 'n beans and a can opener. The store refused to allow me to buy the can opener.

My personal survival definition is being a minimalist and living entirely off the land and bringing nothing but my ability to live off of.
Going camping I use the can opener, the sleeping bag, the propane and electric lanterns etc but I practice my minimalist skills.
In reality I would probably bring guns and ammo, knives for skinning, self defense. One throwing knife would be perfect to attach to a shaft and it would make an ideal spear for throwing.
One idea I had recently was instead of chasing down game, set some people on the far side of a river and take a couple others to scare and herd the animals toward the river. When the animals cross and are mid stream your companions on the other side spring into action. Thus, the animals in the water would panic and we could make easy targets of the ones we wish to kill. It would be an easy hunt and the only ones taken would be enough to last for 3-4 months.
hides would eventually replace sleeping bags and winter clothing. Fuel would be anything from wood to rendered fat. Weapons would gradually give way to bow and arrow as well to spears.
Learning practical uses for others garbage (tin can, buckets etc) would be a necessity.
Hello, Sweetie.
Just passing through and saw your name.
Boots.
It is because of Neil Strauss’ new book, “Emergency: This book may save you life”. There are people hoping to cash in just as PUA trainers saw money after he wrote, “The Game”, a story about the secret world of pickup.
There’s nothing to see here.
Learn to shoot.
Learn to hunt.
Learn to grow veges.
Learn to hide.
Keep enough gold on hand to pay your way anywhere.
Learn basic medical skills.
Have a plan in case society breaks down.
Then, go about living your daily lives. Never live in fear. If you fear something, learn how to defeat it, if your fear is realized. Then, you will not need worry about survival.
CIgars...no one ever mentions the need for a month’s supply of cigars.
Personally, though I love cigars, I would go for pipe tobacco instead. Pipe tobacco lasts almost 10 times as long as an equivalent space for cigars. One 6 inch cigar can last up to 3 hours, if smoked lightly. one inch deep of pipe tobacco can last about as long.
Arizona Granny
I own almost 30 acres of wooded land with a stream. I have a large house on the land. I have a half finished daylight basement that could have its own bathroom and efficiency kitchen for a reasonable price. I have land cleared for a garden and two buildings for chickens and ducks. I live off road in a rural community. I also have a finished rented apartemtn on my property.
Would it be feasable to find a young couple who would have the skills to help fiinish the basement, live there and help work the land and build things? Perhaps finish the chilcken coop, fence the garden and build a pole barn? I have head knowledge In return for work on developing the property into a homestead they could live rent free and sock away monies for their own downpayment. Would this be out of the question? Am I asking for too much? What would be fair?
I have planted tomatoes, 5 plants, cucumbers growing up the fence and trellis, Okra behind my Irises, Lettuce and Spinach used as a border in front and back flower beds. Green Beans about 10 plants, haha, these I have to save up to get a good mess, but sure were tasty.
I decided to plant the Okra because it is selling here for $3.00 per lb., that is ridiculous, it is practically a weed and easy to grow.
