Alaskan malamute Sunny’s reprieve from a death sentence may be short-lived, as the Board of Selectmen last night decided to appeal the court’s decision to spare his life. After going into executive session, selectmen announced in open session that they will appeal the decision made Friday in Leominster District Court to overturn the board’s Dec. 8 decision to kill the year-old dog.“We will be appealing the decision on the dog hearing,” said Selectman Raymond A. Dennehy III.Sunny’s owner, Leo J. Montagna, said he was shocked to hear about the selectmen’s decision when he was contacted by phone last night. Sunny had just returned home Monday.“I am speechless,” he said. “It is just hard to believe. I am so upset.”He and his lawyer, Richard A. Mulhearn of Worcester, said they had hoped the town would let the issue go and were thankful to the court for giving both dog and owner a second chance. On Dec. 8, selectmen voted to have Sunny put to death, against the recommendations of animal behaviorist Philip W. Bolack, a certified dog trainer from Sterling.Selectmen told Mr. Montagna to hire an animal expert to evaluate Sunny after a complaint about an allegedly unprovoked attack on neighbor Alwin J. Haase, 40 Bigelow Road, on Nov. 3. Mr. Haase said the dog knocked him down from behind and bit his arms and legs and scratched his back.

Gorgeous dog but I’m not sure I’d like to meet him in a dark alley. But killing him? Seems extreme.

I don’t know anything about this story, but the dog is only a year old.

If it was a one year old dog, the dog probably thought it was playing.

If he is only a year old, then he is a puppy. Many large dogs don’t fully mature until 3. My guess Sunny wanted to play.
