BUCKFIELD, Maine - Police said a wild turkey is to blame for knocking a 23-year-old man off his motorcycle and breaking his collarbone. Maine State Trooper Corey Huckins said Jeffrey Russell of Hartford was riding with a friend on Route 117 in Buckfield on Sunday afternoon when a wild turkey flew straight into his chest, knocking him backward off his motorcycle. Huckins said the impact was like "hitting a bowling ball at 45 mph."

One of our younger relatives had a close call with a flock of wild turkeys while on his road bicycle.

He was hauling “oats” down hill when a flock of wild turkies flew across the road in front off him. He got tipped by a couple of wings and had one graze his back.

The local wild turkeys get very restless and do kamizaze stuff in the spring time. He will be riding his suv to and from work this spring.

Yeah Wild Turkey has made me WISH I was dead waking up many mornings. I’ll stick with Jim Beam or Maker’s Mark....I don’t tend to wake up next to strange women when I drink those!! LOL

When you’re driving down the highway at night
And you’re feelin’ that wild turkey’s bite
Don’t give johnny walker a ride
Cause jack black is right by your side
You might get taken to the jailhouse and find
You’ve been arrested for driving while blind

A friend was nearly killed last year when a Turkey buzzard hit him full on in the face while riding.

He was approaching some road kill being picked over by a pair of buzzards. A van going the opposite way spooked the birds and one caught in the slip stream of the van ended up hitting my friend who was going about 50.

The buzzard didn’t make it. My friend was bleeding all over his face. He kept control of the bike but does not remember stopping or how he managed after being hit. He had on a helmet.

A doctor in our office helps to write DOT specs for helmets and said he was lucky to be alive. A full face helmet would have killed him he said.

A reminder to other bikers from my doctor buddy. After any impact involving your helmet is the time to trash it. The foam inside will deform making it not as effective for the next crash.
