True - we walked to school as kids but unlike the unfortunate hikers on this thread, it was not uphill both ways and miles each way.... and almost never snow, at least in the summer. ;^)

People just don't take those kind of chances these days with their children.....

My mom didn’t ever kick me out, but I remember once as an 11 or 12 year old — somewhere in there — I got mad in a restaurant and stormed out, having to walk around 15 miles home (good weather; safe route). My feet were very sore when I finally arrived home.
