Police are trying to develop bullet-proof turbans for Sikh officers to wear instead of helmets.
The headwear would allow those who insist on always wearing turbans to join gun or riot squads for the first time.
Scientists are investigating whether bullet-proof Kevlar could be used for the 15ft strip of cloth a turban requires.
British Police Sikh Association vice-chairman Gian Singh Chahal said: 'Sikh officers have been prohibited from becoming firearms officers because our religion does not allow us to remove the turban.
'Nor can we wear the NATO helmet for public order policing.'
He said research had already begun into finding the perfect material to create a ballistic turban, but that the high-tech headgear would need to pass Home Office tests before being used by officers.
He said: 'There has been some research done into producing a ballistic material for turbans and we would like to follow any opportunity where we could manufacture a ballistic product - made out of something like Kevlar - that would ensure a certain degree of protection so Sikh police officers could take part in these roles.
'We need to approach the Home Office and police forces and to gain their acceptance so that Sikh officers could become firearms and public order officers whilst wearing turbans.

I have an affinity for Sikhs, I am not one but my interactions with them leave me with a small bias.
Sikhs are actually pretty cool.
It was unfortunate after 9/11 that people confused them with muslims.
I get a little nervous when people agree with me, but...
One cabbie said to me something like [loosely paraphrased]: "We're men of peace, but we'll kick ass when we have to."
As far as I know, Sikhs have never been part of the terrorists groups in any of the countries
Ali Valiton Faya of the Motel Sikhs.
The “K”’s. I’ve never met a Sikh that that I didn’t like.
Of all non-Christian immigrants, they and the Jews are probably the greatest net contributors to whatever society they join. I'd let 10 million Sikhs in if it were up to me.
Who’d shoot at the head? Anyway it looks like the first shot would take the turban off and the second one the head ... but then in England, nobody but the police and military have guns, Right? /s off ...
“We’re men of peace, but we’ll kick ass when we have to.”
When I lived in the UK, I owned a business that led me to have a lot of dealings with Sikhs.
I was told that they live by seeing God in everything. And one told me that while they see God and Love in everyone and everything, if they get pushed, they will push back. Hard.
:)
The Sikhs have a long tradition of being warriors. They, like the Gurkhas, have served the British Army honorably. Thirty years ago, one old WW II vet in Leeds told me that the Sikhs and other Indian forces serving in North Africa always looked well turned out, really natty dressers, while doing some very dangerous work as sappers (engineers). They would poke the sand with their bayonets to locate mines. Pretty darn ballsy to me.
It just shows you how ignorant people can be. I worked with a Sikh years ago so knew the difference then. I also went to school with a nice young Sikh man - really sweet.
Meanwhile, I don’t get the bulletproof turban - it sits high on the head so the shooter can still just shoot them in the face or neck (I don’t get this really).
.
They had these 15 years ago in Singapore....some versions Had Hidden pistols!!!
Vancouver is known for it's rain. It was always curious how Sikhs could work all day in the rain with out protection for their turbans and not have their head weigh tons from the moisture.
Not a Sikh.
you can tell a sikh by his turban.
I Know That... it was humor I used to Golf with a Sikh in singapore he was 20 years Older Carried his own clubs in the Heat of the day and Drank like a fish!...amazing!!
Singapore came up with mine Resistant shoes.... Tough To maket when Your feet are safe But your crotch is Blown to hell they were trying to create a Market for Cambodia... haha
Exactly.
And that applies to the so-called “bulletproof” helmets as well.
And bulletproof is a misnomer anyway. They’ll stop smaller, lower velocity bullets, but any high-powered rifle bullet at effective ranges will go right through them.
