My guess is Eddie's income has dropped like a rock----and he desperately needs money for legal fees. Plus the upkeep on that monstrosity of a house they built must be enormous.

She used cancer to gain sympathy and deflect criticism and support her husband's campaign, all the time relying on trusting people to get away with it. Now that's vile and nasty."
That nails it. Plus the fact that she was extorting trusting people for campaign contributions, knowing Eddie was not fit to be president.....and could not be elected. Raising money knowing Eddie was going to be exposed as a liar and a cad is fraudulent.
I’d have nothing critical of John and Elizabeth Edwards to say if they’d just go away and work on mending the mess that is their personal lives and if John Edwards would remain out of politics.
