An Oakland man is expected to face an attempted murder charge after he stabbed another man in the heart during a fight inside a popular downtown restaurant early Sunday morning, police said.
What sparked the argument inside La Piñata on Park Street where another man was also stabbed multiple times and one hit on the head with a drinking glass remains unclear, according to investigators. The melee among six men happened at the end of the Park Street Pub Crawl, an informal, non-city event that traditionally takes place among patrons of Alameda bars and restaurants on the first Saturday after July 4. La Piñata was packed with customers when the brawl began about 2:30 a.m., sending people inside the Mexican restaurant scurrying for safety, police said.
The 24-year-old Oakland man who was stabbed once in the heart stumbled outside, where emergency crews transported to him to Highland Hospital in Oakland. His companion, who is 22 and lives in Hayward, suffered six stab wounds, Alameda police Lt. Bill Scott said.
Both victims remain in stable condition at the hospital. A third man, 25, who lives in Alameda and who was hit on the head with a glass, drove himself to Alameda Hospital, where he was treated for a laceration. Police initially arrested both Juan Cortez, 21, and Rubin Leal, 21, on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. But Alameda County District Advertisement
Attorney Charlotte Green told detectives Monday that she planned to charge Cortez whom she said wielded the knife with attempted murder. Both Cortez and Leal live in Oakland and remained in custody Monday at the Alameda city jail. Police said Leal wielded the drinking glass during the altercation.
Patrol officers detained Cortez and Leal shortly after the stabbings as they were walking at Park and Santa Clara avenues, where officers also said they recovered a butterfly knife on the ground in the grass.
The knife was "bloodied" and measures 4 inches long when folded, Scott said. Witnesses later identified Cortez and Leal as the suspects, he added.

If you just have to stab, that’s the place to do it.
Another example of When Keeping It Real Goes Wrong. Just walk away. It’s not al-Qaeda it’s some a-hole at a restaurant. Now look at your life. Trials, jails, lawyers, prisons— not worth it.
Eyeballs are good too. The rear of your socket is only a couple pages of paper thick. Hello brain.
I really miss the mexican wedding calls in the south valley......:o)
Well said.....
Yeah, but you have to be real accurate. With the heart you can just eyeball it. ;>)
Blimey, I used to go there for Sunday brekkers before I moved down South.
