Jupiter is like a giant vacuum for the inner planets, it sucks up a ton of debris that might otherwise hit us.

For all the decades
amateurs and pros have watched
Jupiter closely,

we've only seen this
twice. Fifteen years ago and
earlier this month.

And pretty small scopes
can observe the impact cloud.
Wild, amazing stuff.

Damn that’s right about the same latitude that Shoemaker Levy pounded Jupiter as well. Being a southern hemisphere jovian is a rough job.
