A 13-year-old boy was attacked by a fox on Monday afternoon in a wooded area in the Twin Creeks community in Wake Forest.

Jesse Frutiger said he was in the woods when the animal approached him and immediately started hissing. He said he threw a rock at the fox and that’s when the animal lunged at him

Video also at the news story site.

This occurred in Wake Forest, a "suburb" town near Raleigh, NC. There are lots of reports of Foxes in this area. Where I work, 2 foxes have been spotted on the property of our building.

Grew up in this area and do not remember the proliferation of foxes then at all.

But please read the comments that follow the news story on the WRAL site....

Several posters blame the teen for irritating the fox...so that it lunged at him and bit him.

Sorry, but I am with the teen and his family...not with the .....fox and friends.....

I don't know that it's a matter of being "for" the fox or the teen, but rather a simple case of cause-and-effect. You got a bizarre acting fox and no real weapon or protection, then leave, rather than starting something you can't finish. Just common sense.

Well, here is one comment: “ The boy attacked the fox after intruding in its space in the woods. The fox was just protecting itself. The boy was at fault here IM. “

The fox was hissing at him....which probably was an indication to the boy that the fox might not be friendly...i.e. might attack....so he used the tool at his disposal.

And the fox did attack.

There have been rabid fox attacks in Wake Forest this year on several occasions.....chances are this one was rabid also.

Sorry but i don’t think it strange or odd or bad that the boy tried to defend himself against a hissing and possible attacking fox.

Here is a comment from someone who knows the boy and his famiy...

“Come on people. I know this kid and his family, and their house is surrounded by woods. He was playing in his BACK YARD, and the fox approached HIM. He thought this strange, as would I, and picked up a rock and threw it at him to scare him away. Unfortunately, the rock hit the fox and he went nuts. Now, when is the last time a fox approached YOU and you just blew it off? Jesse did nothing wrong, and a fox that attacks a human is sick, and I’d almost guarantee that. It’s not normal behavior for foxes to even approach humans, as they can smell you and hear you before you even know they’re there. So stop judging this 13 year old kid who tried to shoo off a crazy fox and got bitten. Heck, I’d have done the same thing, as I’ve lived in the country on a farm my whole life and know that foxes don’t act this way unless they are sick. And if I would have had a pistol, DEAD FOX. No doubt about rabies then”.

Who wants to bet that this will be spun by media outlet as Fox (news) attacking the teen? ;)

Man, those guys at Fox News aren’t content to savagely attack the Messiah and his whole Democratic cohort, they’ve now resorted to attacking innocent teenagers. Next thing you know they’ll be after babies!

Wow - now THAT is bizarre....but the response of the Town Officials is par for the course these days:

“Township officials know neighbors are fed up with the fowl encounters, but they don’t plan to do anything about it, citing the rules of natural habitat.”

One of the people commenting on the Fox-bites-teen story said he had seen a COYOTE in that same town - Wake Forest, NC.

No doubt if somebody shot that coyote or that rabid fox, they would be arrested for animal cruelty!

Well, considering I’m not up on how contagious rabies is, and I’d worry that might be an issue when disposing of a dead animal I’d shot, I think I’d rather just run like heck and call animal control. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor :)

I think this boy did what most boys would do - but like you I would probably have turned and run as fast as I could.

The video ends with the news anchor saying government officials say to contact animal control if you see a fox in your area....

Only problem with that is in the “heat” of an attack....well...using whatever weapon you have available seems a pretty normal approach to me also.

I guess my surprise was that so many thought the FOX was justified in attacking the teen.....sorry but good grief!

Whoever wrote this is dead on.

I have spent 48 years in the fox-infested mountains and seen maybe 10 or 11 *live* ones [roadkill doesn’t count] in my whole life.

A fox approaching a person, let alone attacking them is a huge, red flag.

The kid should definitely get rabies shots.

Yes, he is getting the rabies shots - as is his dog who evidently was in a fight with this fox earlier that same day according to the video.

So you saw foxes and they didn’t hiss or lunge at you?

I also grew up in this area - Raleigh Durham Area....played in the woods as a child. NEVER saw a fox or a coyote or a bear....but all of these animals have been sighted in our area.....it is just so bizarre. We are not near the mountains or rural areas.

Today, I would never let a young child play in the woods or go in the woods alone - even if it were near my house.
