TiVo examines TV viewership behavior based on political party affiliation

Big Brother (or in this case little brother, since TiVo only makes up about 10% of the DVRs) is watching. Several data tables below, and I scrolled right down to them. On a glace it seems that TNT’s The Closer could be the best way to unify a partisan nation.

TIVO EXAMINES TV VIEWERSHIP BEHAVIOR BASED ON POLITICAL PARTY AFFILIATION USING ITS POWER||WATCH™ RATINGS SERVICE IN JULY

Highlights how True Targets data affords advertisers a better understanding of television behavioral segments and can help significantly improve consumer targeting and ROI

No Republicans watched a second of Olbermann, No potential alternative fuel vehicle buyers watched a second of O’Reilly in July

It's an interesting read, but a little confusing. First, the period they surveyed was this past July - which is the least watched television period of year. Plus, since everything's in reruns (mostly), this story doesn't give much perspective to the more popular programs that are run during the normal viewing season. No doubt TiVo wants to keep that confidential for their paying customers.

Also, they don't do a very good job of explaining some of the industry-specific terms. But, the long and short of it is - no big surprises in the NEWS ratings, but there are some surprises in the PRIMETIME ratings. I'm surprised "The Bachelor" does so well amongst Republicans, and I'm surprised "The Closer" does well amongst both Republicans and Democrats.

Well I like how “Witness to Jonestown” was one of the most watched shows by Democrats. Makes perfect sense to me...

Only non-political show on Republican side — ESPN’s first take.

On the Democrat side: “Witness to Jonestown”, and “When Forensics Fail: Snaggletooth Killer”

That cracks me up.

It's like turkeys watching Martha Stewart's Thanksgiving Special.

Biggest surprise to me, that Leverage was on the Democrat side, but not the Republican side. Seems like a pretty apolitical show to me.

Of course, as others have pointed out, doing this in July when there are re-runs and few people watching makes any conclusions suspect.

I would love to see a list of all the primetime shows during sweeps, and which audiences they appeal to.

Like I’d love to see how many democrats watch all the FOX shows even though they “hate” Fox. It’s not like Fox has any real conservative TV shows on their network.

Me too. From this TiVo press release, they seem to be intimating that Nielsen doesn't capture this kind of data. I would be curious if that's actually true. And, if it's not true, then I would love to see the data points that Nielsen collects with respect to the viewer's political ideology and what programs they watch or don't watch.

I think what would also be interesting would then examine what kinds of products are being marketed to programs with heavy GOP/Conservative viewers and then to the heavy DNC/Liberal viewers.

I would also love to see the breakout on Letterman, Nightline, all the evening news broadcasts and the View.

On the other hand, from a societal point of view, and from a security/strength point of view, the division of our country on political lines is killing us.

I’d hate to see the media get into making “conservative” and “liberal” TV shows, it’s bad enough we seem to have our own unique news outlets giving us our own unique news.

I don’t WANT American to be two countries. I want an America where I can vehemently disagree with my liberal buddy, and then sit down and watch a good TV show without it turning into a political battle.

As watching TV is not on my top 10 list (except for Beck..) I did not quite understand all their talking points. Did I miss somewhere how they can tell you are an R or a D? I’m confused.

I agree with you, but I'm afraid that boat has left the dock, which is why I want to see those numbers. I'm betting that the networks already understand the partisan divide in television programming, and have been encouraging it, rather than ignoring it or fixing it.

I have a long-standing theorem that goes something like this - "Democrat voters are more impressionable than Republican voters and therefor more desirable by people who pay to advertise on broadcast and cable television".

It would go a long way to explaining a huge shift leftward in television programing the last 20 years. I'm not sure if you're old enough to remember F-Troop, or even Quincy, ME, if you are, or have seen them in reruns, do you ever remember discerning a hint of partisan politics in either of those shows?

It all started with All in the Family, and went south from there. Last year you couldn't watch a single program that didn't have a Bush joke in it. And now, you can't watch a single program that doesn't at some point extol the virtue of President Barack Obama. That's not an accident. I'm just curious if it's not an accident because of the leftward tilt of America's creative community, or is it something more economically oriented, or both?

It's TiVo, not Nielsen. TiVo has created a ratings system that includes demographic information beyond just sex and age. I'm not sure exactly how the determine party ID, as it's not specified in the piece. But, I'm assuming that the people who participate in the TiVo PowerWatch program, complete a questionnaire in the sign-up process.

As you can most likely tell....I don’t have TiVo either. I haven’t found anything on TV that is such a must. But that’s just my opinion.
