In Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy, a billionaire enviromental wacko creates a virus called Shiva. The plan is to release it at the Olympics, thus ensuring that it will go to every country on Earth. When the pandemic takes root, he intends to distribute the vaccine, which in reality is the virus. Within a year, 90 percent of the human population will be dead and “the planet is saved”. Of course being stewrads of the Earth, they stay in a Bioshpere until the virus runs its course.

I remember it well, but mostly because Clancy wrote that the delivery device at the Sydney Olympics would be the big cooling water spray fans needed because the summers in Sydney are so hot. Problem is Australia is in the southern hemisphere and September is their late winter time. My suspension of disbelief was lost at that point.

But I did enjoy what happened in the end to the greenies at the hands of the Rainbow Six team.
