Employers to be hit with big fee jump for unemployment [FL]

PASCO COUNTY (Bay News 9) -- Owning a small business can be difficult and starting soon local entrepreneurs will be dishing out a lot more cash to the government.

The annual fee employers pay to fund unemployment benefits is about to go up drastically.

The fee is jumping from $8.40 per employee to $100.30.

"That'll have a huge burden on the small business man and woman -- any business in the state of Florida -- who are struggling right now," said state Sen. Mike Fasano.

The state is out of unemployment money according to the Florida Department of Revenue. It's trying to recoup lost dollars that were given to people needing extended unemployment pay.

"The state of Florida has to guarantee, and we do guarantee, anyone who loses their job through no fault of their own will get 26 weeks of unemployment compensation," Fasano said.

More Information

While it's good for those without work, Eddie Santangelo, the co-owner of Mezzaluna Pizzeria in downtown New Port Richey, is concerned it could force other businesses like his, to let go of even more people.

"Salaries don't go up, but everything else goes up," Santangelo said. "If taxes go up, I will have to eliminate some of my staff."

The Florida Department of Revenue is expected to announce the increase on Dec. 1, and the increase should go into effect at the first of the year.

According to the Agency for Workforce Innovation, Florida started borrowing unemployment money from the feds back in August.

So far that loan is more than $550 million.

Emphasis mine. There will be no end to this. You make money? Do you try to? You're a government target.

They will not only raise the cap of paying FUI on the first $7,000 annual they’ll raise rates probably as high as 8% of pay. In five years I had no claims until 2008. My rate went from .05% to 5.4% with just this one claim.

Makes you want to hire doesn’t it? GREAT for businesses small and large. /s

Good grief.

What a bassackward situation.

Unemployment taxes should be a bit higher during good times so we are better prepared for the tough times.

Doesn’t anybody plan ahead anymore?

Sad but true. Florida is morphing into CA thanks to illegals and NY/NJ liberals. Hey Charlie Crist maybe your buddy Scott Rothstein the $1 billion ponzi scammer can bailout the state.

I was talking to my doctor last month. He said that the taxes and fees in Alabama make it cheaper for them to shut down early one day a week than to run a full 40 hour a week operation. They can’t make a profit if they operator more than 35 hours a week.

Being a small business owner i hired my first employee 10 years ago. I try to explain to people who don’t have employees that for every dollar I paid my employee I spent another dollar just for taxes and paperwork.

Go Gault!

I took our family business part time 3 years ago. No full time employees.

Took a job for two years with another industry related company while my wife went back to college. She has found a job in her field and is very happy. I left to go back to the family business.

I'm sitting back enjoying life !

I will guarantee every state will be sending out letters in 2010 raising the per employee SUTA rate and also adding the infamous 1 time surcharge probably around $250 / Employee.

I’ve always thought employers should include all expenses on pay stubs. Employees could see that SoS is double what they pay. Every law they pass is a cost. If I’m worth $20 dollars an hour to you, you can only pay me $10 because of all the add ons.

“I’ve always thought employers should include all expenses on pay stubs.”

That, actually, is a very good idea.

In order to save a program that pays out to the unemployed, the government in Florida is going to make it more difficult for employers to hire or retain workers. During an economic downturn.

Brilliant.

The consequence of this will be that more businesses will go out of business, and more unemployed people will be collecting unemployment, which will require another increase in the fee, which will drive another wave of businesses out of business, which will result in another wave of unemployed people...

This can't be accidental.

The Democrats have decided to completely destroy the economy at last, so they can claim that democracy and free-enterprise (which we have not had for a long time) don't work.

They finally get to replace it with something better. Heh.

re: include all expenses on pay stubs I worked for a funeral home in 1962 that was family owned. Several times a year they would pay you in cash, every thing you earned. Then they would make you give them back the various things they had to pay out of the money you had earned. The Dad wanted employees to realize that what the took home each payday was a lot less than it was costing him to employee you. IIRC, I made $200 a month in those days and I would end up giving back about $30. Goodness knows how much it would be today.

And by the way, for that $200 a month I worked a whole more than I would today. We had every other night and every other weekend off, that was it. No paid holidays, no vacation, etc. When you went to work on Monday you were there until Tues. at 6 PM. On your weekend to work you went in on Fri. AM and were there until Monday at 6 PM. You did everything including mowing the lawn, polishing the brass, mopping the entire garage ever Sat. morning, washing and polishing the rolling stock, etc. Ah, the good ol' days!
