They don't all need glasses. But if you always suspected basketball referees are biased well, you're right...
Refs favor the home team... They're big on "make-up" calls. They make more calls against teams in the lead, and the discrepancy grows if the game is on national TV.
The professors studied 365 college games during the 2004-05 season and found that refs had a terrific knack for keeping the foul count even, regardless of which team was more aggressive.
Exhibit A: The 2005 Final Four meeting between Illinois and Louisville. The Illini, known for being more aggressive defensively, got whistled for the first seven fouls. By the end of the game, the foul count was Louisville 13, Illinois 12. The Illini won 72-57.
The take-home message for coaches: The more aggressive your teams the better because, in the end, the foul count is going to be about even no matter what.
It helps explain, the professors say, why college basketball has gotten increasingly physical over the past 25 years.
"Part of the reason for the study came from something my coach used to tell me," ... "He said a team can come in and push and shove and grab and hold, and by the end of the game, or end of the half, they've only got one or two more fouls because officials kind of get tired of calling it."
Among the key findings, which were published The Journal of Sports Sciences earlier this year:
The probability of a foul being called on the visiting team was 7 percent higher than on the home team.

I’m shocked.....NOT!!! Just watch any NBA game.
I’ve never been much of a basketball fan, but one of the observations I made years ago was that the rules of the game weren’t compatible with much of a free-flowing game. Too many damn whistles from start to finish.
My youngest daughter played varsity basketball in high school. I watched pretty much every game. The reffing was almost laughable. In the first couple of games I thought it was just a “girls basketball doesn’t get good refs” sort of thing. It became pretty obvious what they were doing after watching a few games.
It angered me because I didn’t really care who won or lost the game, except when it was obvious that the decisive team in the game was the refs. I normally get angry at pretty much nothing. It became hard to watch those games. And the college games were no better.
The massive subjectivity of the reffing in basketball is one of the reasons I simply do not enjoy watching the game.
I quit watching basketball when they quit calling the most obvious infractions. Those are: traveling, palming the ball, and double dribbling. I’d like to see one NBA “star” dunk a ball without committing at least one if not more of those three antiquated fouls.
Pro basketball, and sadly for the most part college hoops has become just another form of entertainment.
This is the reason I quit watching all sports except Nascar.
And Nascar has been on my sh!tlist recently.
Stopped watching basketball during the Jordan era for this reason. Like in football, there is a penalty/foul/infraction on every play and it’s up to the officials to maintain the flow of the games and keep the players safe. What it turns into is a lovefest with high-profile players. Guys travel so far they need a ticket and bang into other players like they’re moving furniture, throw elbows like Superfly Snuka and it’s overlooked.
I always say that if the NFL officials start to call offensive pass interference, they’re looking for ways to change the outcome.
So I guess the hip-hop/thug/criminal mentality which has infected our society has nothing to do with it, eh? Blame the authorities, while the criminals go blameless...did the ACLU fund this study?
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!
Indeed. Me, too. I haven't watched b-ball since Jordan was playing.
I never watch pro basketball. It reminds me too much of professional wrestling.
I used to umpire softball games and one day it occurred to me that if one team was getting beaten really bad, I would subconsciously take it a bit easier on them. Nothing obvious tho.
NBA: Not Basketball Anymore
Speaking of the NFL, I’ve had it with Instant Replay, it destroys the flow of the game when you have to sit around for 10 minutes like just before the end of the half in the Cowboys Redskins game. Just get better officials instead of relying on technology.
I think about all games FB, BB are decided by the refs.
It has gotten to the point where I am losing my interest in watching the games.
The refs do pretty good with what they have to work with, but they need to change some rules. Raise the basket to 12 ft. and widen the lane, and limit the dribbles to two. In FB the guy with the ball should have at least one foot across the goal before he is down to score a TD.
When Robots ref, I’ll consider watching again.
Jordan did this on all of his possessions. At least one of these. He is such an ass. So is that butt munch libturd Dean Smith.
